Linjiang Night Market has sold daily necessities for decades, according to a local tourism center.“Nobody knows exactly when the market was founded. I guess it has been around for more than half a century. I grew up coming to this night market when I was a child,” said Paul Ou, who has lived in Taipei for over 30 years. “The place sells street food at night. Koreans' overseas card spending hits record high in Q1

/ YonhapOverseas card spending by South Koreans hit a fresh record high in the first quarter on rising outbound tourists, central bank data showed Thursday.In the January-March period, a record $5.07 billion worth of purchases were made abroad, up 11.4 percent from three months earlier, according to the data by the Bank of Korea. From a year earlier, the Q1 tally marked a 26 percent increase.Overseas card spending includes credit and debit cards.The hike came as more people went overseas during the winter vacation season and the four-day Lunar New Year's holiday in February. Some 7.43 million South Korean nationals traveled to foreign countries from January through March, up 8.2 percent from a quarter earlier.Meanwhile, card spending by foreign visitors in South Korea edged down 1.1 percent on-quarter to $2.07 billion over the same three-month period. A mobile pass is also available.The pass is similar to passes offered in Tokyo, Japan, and Oslo, Norway. The organization is aiming to sell the pass to foreigners who will be coming to Seoul alone ― not through travel agencies. Female foreign tourists in their 20s and 30s had mostly been the holders of the previous version of the pass. Seoul seeks to attract more young tourists with the pass. A 24-hour tour pass costs 39,900 won ($37.30). The 48-hour and 72-hour pass cost 55,000 won and 70,000 won, respectively. They can use the pass to ride public transportation such as buses and subway

Air Seoul to open route to Vietnam this week

Air Seoul's aircraft / YonhapAir Seoul Inc., the budget unit of Asiana Airlines Inc., said Thursday that it will launch a new route to Danang, Vietnam, this week, a move that could heat up competition among South Korean carriers over a popular tourist destination.The debut service to Vietnam is set to begin at 10:20 p.m. on Friday, with the 195-seat A321-200 jet being deployed on the route. The service will be available every day, according to the carrier.Currently, six other South Korean carriers operate flights to Danang, a destination that draws about 500,000 South Koreans a year.Air Seoul currently operates six A321 chartered planes -- two configured for 220 passengers and four with 195 seats. With the planes, the low-cost carrier offers services on routes to 16 cities in five countries -- Japan, Cambodia, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the U.S. territory of Guam.The budget carrier plans to add a seventh A321 plane to its fleet in the second half of this year.
