Asia Society Opens Korea Center

By Kang Hyun-kyung Staff Reporter An increasing number of Koreans have sought degrees in the U.S. since the 1990s, but those Koreans having experienced foreign culture seem not to have a better understanding of America, indicated a former U.S. diplomat. Asia Society Chairman Richard C. Holbrooke said Tuesday, ``The Asia Society Korea Center will bridge the two countries by holding diverse, active exchange programs in the fields of policy discussion, education, business and culture.'' A former U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, Holbrooke made the remarks at a Seoul hotel on the occasion of the opening of the Korea Center. With the center, Korea became the 11th country that has a country chapter of the nonpartisan institution established in 1956 to achieve a deeper mutual understanding between America and the Asia-Pacific region. Holbrooke declined to comment on the nature of the Korea-US alliance over the past decade compared with previous decades. But he stressed that ``the Korea-U.S. alliance will continue no matter who becomes the next American Presid

Kim Hyun-soo Takes Office as Oriental Medicine Chief

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter It's time for Oriental medicine to make a fresh start internationally and the Oriental medicine's association will do its best to support the leap forward, said Kim Hyun-soo, the new president of the Association of Korean Oriental Medicine (AKOM), Tuesday. At his inauguration ceremony in downtown Seoul, Kim said he will put priority on promoting the science of Oriental medicine to the world. However, Kim has a lot to do locally, too. Oriental medicine in Korea is facing major challenges as a case to allow trained western oriental medicine doctors to perform acupuncture is impending at the Supreme Court. A high court in Seoul ruled in favor of the Western medics, but Kim said there is a certain science in the form of treatment that others cannot just ``mimic.'' ``What we are pursuing is the health of all people. Acupuncture is not an alternative remedy that anybody can perform. It takes time and effort to learn and my colleagues and I will do our best to set things straight,'' he said. Kim, born in 1961, graduated from Dongguk Univer

Michelle Wie Dating College Big Man

By Kim Hyun-cheol Staff Reporter Korean-American golfer Michelle Wie might have lost some heat on the professional field, but is still basking in the spotlight as a college freshman celebrity. It's even more so when it's about romance as a teenager. Wie, 18, is currently dating Robin Lopez, her Stanford coed and a promising college basketball player, CNNSI reported last week. Stanfordsecret.com, a gossip Web site at Stanford, recently posted a photo of Wie and Lopez at a campus auction event. At the auction, Wie purportedly bought the men's volleyball team without Lopez's consent and ``spurred a small outburst of jealousy,'' the site said. ``We, however, believe that Robin and Michelle's relationship is still on firm grounds as the volleyball team, though tall and athletic, could not physically match up to Robin's 'height.''' Lopez, a 214-centimeter sophomore center and one year senior to Wie, leads the Stanford Cardinal with his twin brother Brook, and contributed to his team heading into the Sweet 16 at this year's NCAA ``Mad March'' tournament for the first time

TV Anchorwoman Sets Stage for Gender-Equalized Society

By Park Si-soo Staff Reporter In most Korean workplaces, the legacy of Confucianism still reigns. Glass ceilings are everywhere. It's not an easy job for a woman to break through the invisible yet very real ceiling in this male-dominant society. Against these odds, a lot of career women are climbing higher. At the forefront of the pack is Kim Ju-ha, 35, anchor and reporter for MBC TV's prime-time news program. An international organization acknowledged the popular journalist as a ``young global leader'' in recognition of her contribution to breaking the norm to set a new role model for females. Kim, 35, received the honorary title on March 11 from the World Economic Forum (WEF). She has made a name for herself as the first female in Korean broadcasting history to host a news program on her own. The program was MBC's ``News Desk,'' and is aired over the weekends. ``I'm honored to be selected as a global leader. But you know it's an undue honor as well,'' Kim said in an interview with The Korea Times. ``One of the reasons behind my winning was, I've heard, I had b
