Wizard Works CEO Picked as Promising Entrepreneur

By Cho Jae-hyon Staff Reporter Charles Pyo, CEO of Wizard Works (http://wzdworks.com), has been selected as one of "Asia's Best Young Entrepreneurs 2009" by BusinessWeek magazine. Pyo established his company in 2006 as a provider of personalized portal services, with the site offering a wide choice of widgets ― small chunks of code that can drive applications on Web sites. "The personalized portal didn't take off but its widget services were a hit, so Pyo decided to focus on widgets and has now become Korea's leading creator and distributor of them," the magazine said. Wizard Works offers widget marketing services and helps build widget-incorporated intranets for companies. All of the heavyweight portals in Korea, including Naver, Daum, Google and Yahoo offer widgets created by Wizard Works. Pyo has been known as one of the promising young Korean entrepreneurs in the domestic IT industry. Japanese R&B Singer to Perform in Seoul

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Popular Japanese R&B singer Mai Kuraki will be holding her first solo concert in Seoul in November, Yonhap News reported. Kuraki, who is celebrating her 10th anniversary as a singer this year, will hit the stage at Melon-AX Hall, Gwangjang-dong, Nov. 14. Originally from Funabashi, Chiba, Kuraki made her debut on the Japanese music scene 10 years ago. She released her first single ``Love, Day After Tomorrow'' in 1999. The following year, her first full-length album, ``Delicious Way,'' topped the charts, selling over 2 million copies. She holds the record for being the only female artist to have all her singles debut in the top 10 chart. Six of her eight albums topped the Japanese album charts. Kuraki regained her popularity when she released her 8th album ``Touch Me!'' and a compilation of her biggest hits ``All My Best.'' Incheon Fair Incheon Mayor Wins Woodrow Wilson Award

By Kang Shin-who Staff Reporter Incheon Mayor Ahn Sang-soo has been selected as the winner of the ``2009 Woodrow Wilson Award.'' Incheon Metropolitan City Government said Tuesday Ahn, the mayor of the nation's second largest port city, will receive the award from the U.S.-based Woodrow Wilson International Center for his achievements in successfully winning a bid to host the 2014 Asian Games and in carrying through various development projects for a free economic zone. The award is annually given to those who have made outstanding achievements in business and the public sphere. LG Electronics was named as the corporate award winner. Cartoonist Kim Sang-taek Dies of Cancer

By Cho Jae-hyon Staff Reporter Cartoonist Kim Sang-taek passed away Tuesday, losing his battle against stomach cancer. He was 55. Kim was one of the most popular newspaper cartoonists, with his witty, sarcastic cartoons loved by readers for their sharp insight and unique touch. He started his career with the Kyunghyang Daily in 1988 and worked for the paper until he moved to the JoongAng Ilbo, where he worked from March 1999. He is survived by his wife and a son. Wonder Girls’ Autographing on Shoes Causes Stir

The Wonder Girls, the five-member pop sensation now active in the United States, has caused a stir among Korean netizens over photos showing two members of the girl band signing autographs on the shoes of American fans. The photos were posted on the Web site of an American radio channel that organized an autograph session in Florida last month. In the photos circulating on the Internet, Sohee and Yubin, two members of the girl band, lowered themselves to sign autographs on a shoe placed on the autographing table, with the fan still wearing it. Witnesses reportedly said that three female fans received autographs on their shoes. "Even by Western standards, it's impolite for a fan to place a soiled shoe on a table and demand an autograph,"a witness was quoted as saying by a Korean daily. Lee Young-ae Talks on Marriage

By Cho Jae-hyon Staff Reporter Actress Lee Young-ae expressed her position about her secret marriage to a businessman Tuesday for the first time since she returned home following their wedding last month at a resort in Hawaii. Actress Kim Tae-hee Was Perfect Student

Actress Kim Tae-hee, well known for her beauty, was found to have achieved perfect scores in all subjects during three years in middle school. An MBC TV program got its hands on her school records and disclosed them to the media ahead of the launch of the new entertainment program "Star the Secret." ``The school records showed that Kim had claimed top places during the entire three years, with perfect scores in all subjects at the school. It's unbelievable," an MBC staff member said. Kim Ki-young Will Lead Kwangwoon Univ.

By Kang Shin-who Staff Reporter Kim Ki-young, the current vice president of Yonsei University, was named the 8th president of Kwangwoon University on Saturday. The 72-year-old will succeed current president Lee Sang-chul and officially lead the university from October 9 for four years. Kim earned his bachelors degree at Yonsei University, and his masters and doctorate at the University of Washington. Kim served as president of the Korean Academic Society of Business Administration and chairman of the Taekwang school board. Chung Hee-ja Appointed as Honorary Consul of Guatemala

By Kim Se-jeong Staff Reporter Chung Hee-ja, founder of the Artsonje Center and Museum was appointed as Honorary Consul of Guatemala to Korea last week. She is the wife of former Daewoo Group chairman Kim Woo-choong. Guatemalan Ambassador to Korea Rafael Antonio Salazar Galvez last Thursday presented her a certificate of appointment, saying that Chung would strengthen exchanges in economics, culture and tourism between Korea and Guatemala. As a private collector, Chung founded the Artsonje Museum in the Gyeongju Bomun complex, North Gyeongbuk Province, exhibiting her own collection. In Seoul, she is the director of the Artsonje Center, a private contemporary art museum. She was recognized for her efforts in promoting Guatemala in Korea. ``She is a good friend of mine. Also, she is interested in investment in Guatemala, and promotes Guatemalan commodities like coffee and wood in Korea,'' the ambassador said. Hatoyama Meets With Korean Actor

By Cho Jae-hyon Staff Reporter Incoming Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama, known as being a fan of ``hallyu,'' or the Korean cultural wave, met Korean actor Lee Seo-jin in Tokyo Monday. Lee was on a tour to promote his TV drama ``Yi San.'' During the meeting at the incoming Prime Minister's office, Lee reportedly said that he hoped that the two countries would boost cultural exchanges. The incoming Prime Minister's wife Miyuki Hatoyama was also present. A Japanese PR agency Color Pink Japan arranged the meeting to promote ``Yi San,'' which recounts the high-flying life and times of Yi San (played by Lee) or King Jeongjo (1752-1800), the 22nd king of the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910).
