Rhee Picked as 1st Korean Judge for Olympic Figure Staking Event

By Cho Jae-hyon Staff Reporter The Korea Skating Union (KSU) said Monday its Vice President Rhee Chi-hee has been selected as a judge for the female figure skating event for next year's Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada. "It will be the first time that a Korean will serve as judge for the Winter Olympics," Rhee told Yonhap News agency in Paris where she served as judge for the Trophee Bompard. Rhee passed the International Skating Union's qualifying test to become an international umpire in September 2001, becoming the first Korean to obtain the license. The selection of Rhee has been backed by world champion Kim Yu-na who captured the Trophee Bompard championship, Saturday, winning the free skate with a flawless performance to outrival Japanese skater Mao Asada. The ISU has granted judging qualification to those from nations whose skaters claimed 24th and above in international events. In the 2006 Torino Winter Olympics, Rhee wasn't able to serve as judge since no Korean qualified for the games. In Vancouver, she will be among nine judges who score the perf

Oh Eun-sun Gives Up Attempt for Annapurna

By Cho Jae-hyon Staff Reporter Oh Eun-sun, 43, was forced to give up her attempt to ascend the 8,091-meter Annapurna peak in Napal due to bad weather, delaying her goal to become the first woman in the world to scale all 14 peaks in the Himalayas above 8,000 meters until early next year. Her sponsor Blak Yak, a climbing gear maker, said she had to retreat to the Annapurna base camp due to unfavorable weather conditions on Monday. ``Taking into consideration the safety of our team members and the difficulty in figuring out routes, we will return to the base camp, ending our bid to climb Annapurna,'' Oh was quoted as saying by the sponsor. She reached a camp at the 5,100-meter point but could not make it further due to strong winds and thick fog. Her sponsor said she will be able to resume her bid next year as climbing will be more difficult with winter approaching in the Himalayas. She departed for Nepal for her final challenge on Sept. 14. She first drew attention in 1997 by climbing to the top of the 8,035-meter-high GasherbrumⅡ. In 2004, Oh became the first

Foreign Entrepreneurship Vital for Korean Economy

By Jane Han Staff Reporter In Silicon Valley, the tech-savvy territory of northern California, more than half the start-ups were founded by immigrants over the past decade, according to research by Harvard University. But in Korea, the corresponding figure is less than 1 percent. "Korea needs to foster an environment more conducive for foreigners to start businesses here and this can create a lot of value," said Simon Bureau, chairman of the Canadian Chamber of Commerce in Korea (CanCham), in an interview with The Korea Times. "Much has been said about the need to foster a better environment for foreign investments in Korea. However, not enough attention has been given to promoting foreign entrepreneurship." According to the Harvard study, the immigrant-founded start-ups in Silicon Valley employed 450,000 workers and had sales of $52 billion in 2005. Such facts were important enough for CanCham to organize a panel discussion to highlight what Korea should do to leverage the intellectual capital of foreign entrepreneurs, scheduled for Thursday at the Ritz-Carlton ho
