Model Daul Kim Found Dead

By Cho Jae-hyon Staff Reporter Korean supermodel Daul Kim, who was regarded as one of the most beautiful models in the world, was found dead by French police in her Paris apartment, Thursday, her modeling agency Next Management said in a statement. She was 20 years old. ``She was a top model and a great friend to all of us at Next. Please respect her family's privacy at this time of sadness. We will all miss her very much,'' it said. No other details of her death have been made available, though some reports speculate that she committed suicide. An official from Esteem, a Seoul-based agency representing Kim, said, ``We heard the news from our Paris agency and don't know any details yet.'' A world-renowned model, Kim was named No. 17 on Fashion Time Magazine's ``Top 20 Hottest Models'' list in 2008. Known for her quirky personality, Kim has been celebrated for her sense of style. She ran a blog called ``I Like to Fork Myself'' for two years, posted the song ``I Go Deep'' by Jim Rivers under the title ``Say Hi to Forever'' on Nov. 18 ― the day before her death.

Drama Producer Song, Actress Lee to Wed Jan. 3

Song Byung-joon, 49, head of Group Eight, which produced the drama "Boys Over Flowers," will tie the knot with TV actress Lee Seung-min, 30, on Jan. 3 in Seoul. "Song Byung-joon seemed to have been determined to marry Lee after the drama 'Tamra, the Island,' ended on MBC TV. Song formally proposed to Lee earlier. They have been busy preparing for the wedding, after deciding on Jan. 3 as the wedding date. He has informed his close aides of the news," said an entertainer close to the couple. "Song has been happy enough to even invite a few of his close friends on his honeymoon trip.'' A close aide to Lee said, "Lee has been acting in the drama 'At the Village Over the Mountain,' on KBS1. Jeonjinsang Clinic Offers Medical, Welfare, Hospice Services By Cho Jae-hyon Staff Reporter On a reception desk at the Jeonjinsang clinic ― immersed in a sea of shoddy flats on a hill in Siheung-dong in southwestern Seoul ― a note is posted: "Those who have difficulty getting medical services due to a lack of money are welcome." For 34 years, the clinic has provided not only free medical services but also consultations on legal, educational and various other home affairs for the urban poor. Marie-Helene Brasseur, 63, nicknamed "the doctor with blue eyes," has treated and helped people who suffer from diseases and poverty at the clinic since its inception in 1975. The institute, established after the late Cardinal Kim Soo-hwan called for action, seeks to provide comprehensive medic and welfare services. HS Global Citizens Invited to Tell Seoul Stories

For its"Streaming SEOUL 2009" campaign to publicize the capital, the Seoul Metropolitan Government is challenging people to create UCC on the theme"Seoul Story on Earth," and photos and video clips on the theme"Making a Seoul Map." The contests are open to citizens all around the world. For the"Seoul Story" contest, participants are asked to tell their stories and experiences about Seoul or recommend places in a one-to-three-minute presentation. It will give out six awards, including a 10-million-won ($8,300) grand prize and five prizes of 2 million won each. The grand prize is reserved for contestants residing in Seoul. Composer Barakatt Premieres UNICEF Anthem in Seoul

By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter Canadian composer Steve Barakatt kicks off the global UNICEF anthem campaign in Seoul, Friday, for the 20th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of the Rights of the Child, the musician told The Korea Times in a recent email. In the surprise visit, the music video of ``Lullaby,'' UNICEF's new anthem composed by Barakatt, will be revealed for the first time at ING Center, Sunhwa-dong, Jung-gu. The composer will play the piano. On the same day, the music video will be released to over 26,000 media outlets around the world, including the United Nations headquarters in New York. The song will also be performed live by orchestras and ensembles on and around Friday in at least 15 countries in four continents and in outer space. Communications Korea Recruits Crisis Control Specialist

Mr. World Korea to Be Aired Friday

MBC ESPN, a local cable sports network, will air the Mr. World Korea 2009 gala Friday, which was held in Songdo, Incheon Nov. 7 to pick the nation's most attractive and desirable men. It will broadcast the competition in a variety show format for two hours from 11 p.m., the Mr. World Korea organizing body said, Wednesday. SHINee to Perform in Manila

Hicap Korea Times Correspondent MANILA ― K-pop boy band SHINee will perform in a concert in the Philippines on Nov. 27 as part of celebrations for the 60th anniversary of Korea-Philippines diplomatic relations as its two members who contracted influenza A (H1N1) are expected to have completely recovered by then. SHINee's participation was confirmed by the Korean Embassy in the Philippines. The concert, called the Philippines-Korea Friendship Festival, is being organized by Korea's Arirang TV and the National Broadcasting Station, a government-owned TV station in the Philippines. Yu-na Falls to Second in World Rankings

The 19-year-old South Korean earned 3,960 points to place second to Italian Carolina Kostner, sitting on 4,111, in the world rankings announced by the International Skating Union (ISU) Tuesday (KST). Kim climbed atop the list last month after winning the Trophee Eric Bompard in Paris, the season-opening Grand Prix event. Kim claimed her seventh straight Grand Prix title after topping Skate America in Lake Placid, N.Y. Sunday, but the rankings are based on points accumulated from contests such as the world championships, Winter Olympics, the Grand Prix series and final and invitational events over the last three seasons. Kim usually only competes in the Grand Prix and world championships. A Language Barrier Buster

Prof. Son Offers Free Interpretation With bbb Korea By Cho Jae-hyon Staff Reporter About eight years ago, Son Bong-ho, an honorary professor of Seoul National University and a well-known civic activist, was lured into the idea of providing free interpretation services for foreigners through cell phones. In early 2002, when the whole country was preparing for the Korea-Japan FIFA World Cup, he was introduced by one of his colleagues to the volunteer service and, without a second thought, he joined. Since then, he has been providing interpretation services as one of the volunteers for "bbb (before Babel brigade) Korea," a non-profit organization set up in 2002 with an aim to offer free interpretation services over the phone for foreigners.
