ASEAN artists promote cultural exchanges

­ ­The picture “Old Woman Loves What She is Doing” shows a Laotian farmer working in arice paddy.By Kim Hyo-jinThe ASEAN-Korea Center kicked off a unique exhibition Thursday that displays artworks showing daily lives of Southeast Asian nations.Thirty three artists from countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and Korea are displaying their contemporary photography and media at the “ASEAN-Korea Multimedia Exhibition.”The exhibition will run until Jan. 18 at the Gallery Moon of the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) in Seoul.The ASEAN-Korea Center organized the event as a follow-up of the 2014 ASEAN-ROK Commemorative Summit. It aims at bridging the cultural gap between ASEAN countries and Korea by introducing their daily lives captured in the photography and media art.On display is a Thai photo of old traditional houses, a Singaporean photo of modern landscape, a Vietnamese photo of people lying down on hard-covered train seats and a Laotian photo of a harvesting farmer at work in a rice field.“I hope through the Exhibition,

 By Park Si-sooFrank Schaefers was named CEO of Robert Bosch Korea, the company said Thursday.He joined the Bosch Group in 1992 and has over 20 years experience in various functions. Previously, he worked as general manager at Robert Bosch Automotive China from October 2012 until the end of 2014. Schaefers worked at the Bosch Group in Stuttgart between 2008 and 2012.The 51-year-old earned a business administration degree from Munich University in Germany and a doctoral degree in educational science from Magdeburg University.

Prof. Seo Kyung-dukBy Jhoo Dong-chanA scholar promoting the nation’s easternmost islets of Dokdo has disclosed a plan to hold a golf event on the rocky volcanic outcroppings to celebrate the 70th anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule. Prof. Seo Kyung-duk of Sungshin Women's University, also known as an expert in promoting South Korea abroad, said Tuesday that his plan aimed to help the world better understand the islets.“We are thinking of a tee shot event hitting from Dokdo’s Eastern Islet to Western Islet,” said Seo. We will invite renowned golfers at home and abroad to Dokdo.” The distance between the islets is about 150 meters, equivalent to a par 3 hole on a regular golf course. Korea National Opera has new general director

Prof. Han Ye-jinBy Kwon Ji-younThe Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism has named a new general director for the Korea National Opera (KNO). The ministry announced Friday that Sangmyung University visiting professor Han Ye-jin, 44, will take the helm of the KNO for the next three years. Han, also known abroad as Regina, studied at the G. Verdi Conservatorio di Milano before taking to European and Japanese operatic stages as a soprano. The ministry said that her experience and expertise will allow the KNO to experiment in efforts to take Korean opera to the next level. Han has won prominent competitions including the Padova International Music Competition and the Como International Competition, and has taken on leading roles in a number of KNO operas, including “Salome” and “La Boheme.” She also taught at Chungnam National University, Pai Chai University and Hansei University. Though young, experts agree that Han has what it takes to lead the KNO to success. Former KNO directors include tenor Lee In-beom, baritone Oh Hyun-myung and soprano Chung Eun-sook.

Hyundai Motor and its sister firm Kia Motors have participated since 2009.Hyundai is displaying its fuel cell battery for the Tucson ix, and telematics technology Blue Link — an integrated multimedia navigation system using a connected mobile phone.
