(33) Article 33 Expression stars II

We are studying five cycles in four pillars to influence our life paths, namely, the friend, expression, money, career and knowledge stars. The friend star is the same element as a day master, and it generates the expression star, which generates the money star, which generates the career star, which generates the knowledge star, which generates the day master. As we learned, the five elements circulate as waterawoodafireaearthametalawater in their generation cycle, while moving as waterafireametalawoodaearthawater in their restriction cycle. We may substitute the five saju stars for the five elements in order to understand people's fate. The expression stars with different yin and yang use more energy than those with same yin and yang, as they are excessive and over reactive. When the expression cycle is in good composition with the knowledge cycle, people are gifted with eloquence and very good at teaching, because they are intelligent, quick at learning and express knowledge very well. People with good expression cycles are logical but don't adapt themselves well to o

Gleevec Helps Fight Diabetes

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter Korean researchers have found that cancer-fighting drug Gleevec reduces the stress on fat cells known to cause type-2 diabetes. A team led by Dr. Lee Myung-shik of the Samsung Medical Center discovered that after injecting Gleevec into mice, the drug reduces pressure on the endoplasmic reticulum, an organelle, which when threatened by excessive fat can lead to a disorder in the functioning of insulin, which controls blood sugar levels. ``The conventional treatment for diabetes has been geared toward controlling insulin, and hence, blood sugar levels, keeping the disease from reaching incurable stages, although no cure has been found. ``But since Gleevec diminishes the prevalence of diabetes, the finding is expected to lead to the development of new drugs,'' Lee said. Lee's report was published in the medical journal Diabetes. Some four million people in Korea suffer from diabetes, and the number is expected to exceed 10 million in 30 years, barring the emergence of any new form of treatment, according to Dr. Sohn Ho-young of St. Mary

(32) Expression star I

By Janet Shin The expression stars are the elements generated by a day stem (friend star). The Chinese word for the expression star means plentiful food served after hard work. It also means that when a person doesn't work hard, he doesn't deserve food. When the saju has good and strong expression stars, the person is talented and eloquent. For this reason, we may see good expression stars in the saju of many singers, actors and actresses. The teachers and professors have good expression stars in their saju along with good knowledge stars. Whether they are teaching at a prominent university or tutoring depends on the status of their career stars. On the other hand, the person who has too many expression stars in its saju has talents in several different areas so he tends to have difficulty prioritizing. Although it is one of the most important factors in current society, it was tempered a little in ancient Oriental society. Knowledge and career stars were valued more than the expression stars in old days, because people thought too much talent is harmful in maintaining one'

Lawyer Recalls Warmth of Cardinal

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter International lawyer Kim Chan-jin looked at the late Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan not just as Korea's spiritual leader but as a father figure. In an interview with The Korea Times, Kim talked about his close relationship with the cardinal, whom he first met in 1982. Throughout the decades, he served Cardinal Kim, earning his trust and confidence. ``I was parish chairman at Bangbae-dong. In 1987, the cardinal gave me a few assignments because he was having some problems in obtaining government approval for projects. I was working in government at that time, but I could hardly use my authority. There was a piece of land in Uijeongbu that the church wanted to use as a student campsite, but the Ministry of Defense refused. I had to convene a meeting and persuaded the ministry to accept it,'' he said. Kim's efforts were rewarded with praise from the cardinal. Also around that time, Cardinal Kim asked for the lawyer's help in finding a suitable property to build a new church in Bangbae-dong. By coincidence, a 200-pyeong property n

(31) Friend stars II

Deepen your understanding of friend stars By Janet Shin Last week, we discussed the friend stars, the same elements as a day master. With different yin and yang, it's more calculating, brutal and overbearing, so selfish that he never concedes his money or women. But when the day stem is weak, the friend star can be a good support. The person with lots of friend stars in different yin and yang is not a good business partner and it's difficult to relate to him. When a woman has heavy friend stars, she has masculine qualities. Men and women who have heavy friend stars are heroes or heroines. Since they have strong energy, their love fortune can't be good. They're mostly egoistical, so they seldom care about others and can be self-righteous. In particular, when a woman has strong friend stars, her husband can't be strong. (A friend star restrains the money star, and the money star nourishes career star, which is her husband.). Since he is inclined to be selfish, independent, and doesn't listen to others, he's neither delicate nor elaborative. The strong friend star does not alwa

Late Cardinal Changed My Life, Korea

By Norbert Dong-yeob Cha Contributing Writer The last time I met Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan was May 21, 2008, for an interview for monthly magazine ``Pastoral Information.'' Although he was weak and was refusing visits, he made an exception and granted me one. He was a bit off guard due to his poor vision and language, so I jokingly asked ``Do you know who I am?'' The cardinal reacted with his special dazzling smile and said ``Ah, if anybody doesn't know who you are, he is a spy.'' Of all the wisdom he shared with me, what I remember most is that ``We must create a church where we consider everything of mankind as our own, from joy and hope to sorrow and agony. Clergymen and believers must know this,'' he said. Before I left, I asked for a benediction. His fragile and weak voice turned into a strong and mighty one, as if the Holy Spirit was passing through his voice. When I was a Seoul National University student in the late 1970s, when the nation was going through a painful transition toward democracy, he was at the forefront of resistance. Not only did we fin

Koreans Flock to Mourn Death of Cardinal

Hundreds of South Koreans flocked to Seoul's landmark cathedral Tuesday, offering their prayers to Stephen Kim Sou-hwan, the country's first cardinal who stood with the people in the pro-democracy movement of the 1980s, Yonhap News reported Tuesday. Kim, who was promoted to the rank of cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1969, died at Seoul's St. Mary's Hospital Monday evening at the age of 86. He was said to have died peacefully, surrounded by family and members of the parish. Kim's body was laid in a glass coffin at the Myeongdong Cathedral in central Seoul late Monday. The church has been drawing crowds of faithful wanting to pay their last respects and catch a glimpse of the man who had been their spiritual leader for decades. The cathedral will be open to all citizens, including non-Catholics, for four days until Friday when a funeral mass will be held, officials at the Archdiocese of Seoul said. President Lee Myung-bak, a Protestant, called Kim's death a "great loss to the nation," praising the cardinal's symbolic role in the country's democratic and labor movements, Yonha

New Research Identifies Asthma-Causing Gene

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter A research team made up of Koreans and experts from 10 other countries claims to have identified a gene that causes asthma, heralding the discovery as a world first. According to the Ministry for Health, Welfare and Family Affairs, Prof. Park Chun-shik and Eo Su-taeg of Soon Chun Hyang University and Prof. Shin Hyoung-doo of Sogang University, among other found that people with the rs1420101 gene have a higher chance of contracting the condition. The gene is part of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) IL1RL1 (interleukin 1 receptor-like 1) gene sequence. The SNP is said to differ from person to person and race to race. The researchers said their results showed that people with the rs1420101 gene, regardless of race or physical characteristics, are more likely to have asthma after it was linked to the formation of the inflammatory cell causing the disease. The IL1RL1 had been thought to have a strong correlation with asthma, and the findings appear to provide scientific proof of its link to the condition, the team said. The rese

Chung-Ang Eyes Medical Tourism

By Bae Ji-sook Staff Reporter Chung-Ang University Medical Center has set in motion plans to aggressively attract foreign patients seeking high-quality surgery at relatively low costs. New Director General Ha Kwon-ick disclosed details of the drive Wednesday, revealing that bosses are ready to upgrade the quality of the hospital to make it one of the top five medical centers in the country and promote the country's medical expertise worldwide. ``When I was the director of the Eulji Medical Center in Daejeon, I thought hot springs and nearby ginseng fields were perfect for foreign medical tourists. I think Seoul has lots to offer foreigners and the Chung-Ang center has an international health clinic offering a top-notch service,'' he said. Ha believes the hospital ― a member of the Council for Korea Medicine Overseas Promotion, the body in charge of promoting medical tourism ― can also tap into the potential presented by foreign insurance firms, which are also interested in the Korean market due to costs that are low by international standards. ``Tangible progress wi

(30) Friend Stars 1

By Janet Shin What's the difference between avarice and ambition? Everybody desires a better life, whether a quality of life or wealth. When it is achieved, we consider it a successful life and disregard how it was acquired. Saju considers three major factors to determine fate: time, space and the will (or the effort). These three factors are combined to make a person's life successful or not. Not a single factor makes one's fortune. Sometimes, real happiness lies in the acceptance and understanding of one's destiny. Unhappiness lies in the fact that we realize this truth too late. We will be able to read fate by understanding the meaning of each letter in saju. Among various interpretation of saju, ten stars are the most practical and interesting for reading fate. As we reviewed the classification of the ten stars last week, you can know their attributes, a highlight of saju study. Let's start with a friend star from this week. Open your saju and see what your friend stars are and how they stand. 1.Friend cycle (Friend star) It's the same element as a day stem. For
