Is having twins really growing trend in Korea?

By Jane HanAs we know, Korea is a country full of fads. From food, clothes and cosmetics to even language, fast-changing trends influence people’s decisions. Lately, what’s been interesting is that I’ve heard that even couples having twins is part of a growing trend here.Really? Really. Now you may wonder how and why on earth producing two babies at once can possibly become “popular.”There’s actually a pretty clear and convincing primary reason. As more Koreans are choosing to marry later, couples are finding it tougher to conceive naturally. And so they are turning to artificial insemination or in-vitro fertilization, which has recently led to a spike in the number of multiples in Korea. Also interestingly, popular reality TV show “Superman Returns” seems to be playing a big part.I haven’t followed this show all that closely, but apparently actor Song Il-gook’s triplets and comedian Lee Hwi-jae’s twins are totally stealing the show with their cuteness. But based on the few episodes I’ve seen so far, it seems as if

Enjoy winter sports without joint injuries

By Song Sang-hoAbout 7 million people visit ski resorts in Korea annually, figures show. To make the most of this, ski resorts now open from mid-November.But with so many skiers and snowboarders, the risk of accidents is increasing.According to National Emergency Management Agency research, more than 12,700 people were injured whileskiing or snowboarding from 2007 to the first half of 2010.Such sports are popular because people can enjoy the fast speed and dynamic movements — but they are also dangerous. Moreover, as such sports involve outdoor activities in the cold, muscles or ligaments contract, making them more vulnerable to injuries caused by small impacts.Knee joints are injured the most in ski resorts. The ankles and knees are fixed on to the ski or the snowboard, and when they are subjects to twisting force, ligaments can easily be damaged.Anterior cruciate ligament ruptures are the most common injuries, sometimes with lateral meniscal tears as well. The anterior cruciate ligament, which ensures that the knee maintains stability, can easily be twisted so it is susceptib

Cancer pain drug hits global market

Kominox, a medicine for cancer-related painBy Jung Min-hoOther than making a complete recovery, one of the biggest wishes for cancer patients is to be free from pain. A CEO of Korean pharmaceutical firm believes he has found the way.Komipharm CEO Yang Yong-jin said Kominox, a medicine for cancer-related pain, is the next big thing in the world’s pharmaceutical industry. The Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA), the regulatory body for therapeutic goods in Australia, allowed the medicine to be sold from last month under its Access to Unapproved Therapeutic Goods via the Special Access Scheme.“This means Kominox is only one step away from getting the TGA’s sales approval,” he said. “As soon as we get clinical outcomes from 120 people, who took the medicine, we will apply for the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s approval.”He believes that Kominox, which his company has developed over the past 12 years, will be sold in the U.S. and European markets in the near future once the medicine gets TGA’s green light.“That’s why I wen

(296) Husband and wife

By Janet Shin According to saju, a husband has the energy to restrict his wife in their relations. This is not just a particular case, but applies to everyone. From the man’s standpoint, wives always have the opposite energy from their own day master that they need to overcome. When people learn this fact, they become embarrassed at first. Since most people regard conjugal relations as a romantic and productive, they never consider it negatively. Even though many people experience troubles in their marriage, it is still believed to be the happiest event in life and brings a great deal of delight. This is so true. We often hear cases of a once loving couple becoming bitter enemies after several years of marital life. In a recent news report, the founder of a large English academy was betrayed by his wife and deprived of his ownership. They argued with each other over the management and property rights. A similar case happened before with a famous hospital. The two chairmen of the board, who established the hospital together as husband and wife, split their pa

Is disc problem only spinal disease?

By Kim Sang-hyuk There are many reasons for spine pain, but people commonly associate it with a herniated disc when there is a problem in their spine. But spondylolisthesis is one of those diseases that people are much less familiar with.According to Health Insurance Review and Assessment Service Agency, the number of patients with spondylolisthesis has increased from 13,000 in 2010 to 15,000 in 2013. Considering this condition accounts for 15% of the entire spinal surgery cases, it is one of the more frequent diseases in the spine. Spondylolisthesis is the forward displacement of a vertebra, causing pressure on spinal nerves. Our spine consists of multiple vertebrae that are connected to support the body weight and to allow the body movement. However, if the connections between these become loose and dislocated, the upper vertebra moves forward over a lower one and presses on spinal nerves, causing back pain and leg numbness. In 1782, Belgian gynecologist found out that the forward displacement of the fifth lumbar vertebra compresses the pelvis causing various problems

Treating chronic dry skin in winter

By Lee Sung-hun Winter is a very dry season in Korea. Although the cold and dry air may feel refreshing to some, there are people who feel itchy all over the body and habitually scratch themselves whenever such weather begins. With such dry air, there are others who also complain of dryness related ailments such as dry nasal mucosa and dry coughing. Conditions can get even worse indoors as heating can make the relative humidity even lower than outside.Especially for the people with dry skin types the dry air and cold wind of this season can rob the skin’s stratum corneum pigment layer of its moisture to cause miniscule pigments to peel off and cause itchiness. The stratum corneum pigment layer as the outer-most layer of the skin contains sufficient moisture to keep skin healthy. However, if the moisture in the stratum corneum is lost, a person may suffer from xeroderma. Xerodama is a condition where the skin starts to lose its moisture when the outer air becomes too dry (usually below 50 percent relative humidity) and when it becomes itchy.Approximately 20 percent of those in

Postpartum care - at home or not?

Korea’s maternity hotels are insanely overpriced. / YonhapExploring Korea’s maternity hotelsBy Jane Han Birthing tradition has changed so much in Korea in recent years.Even until the early 1990s, it was the most common and natural thing for a new mom to head straight home from the hospital after delivering her child. I mean, where else would she go with a newborn, right? But nowadays, most new moms seem to make a two to three week long stop at one of the country’s growing number of postpartum care centers.I have no first-hand experience with this kind of service since I’ve only delivered in the U.S., so I took the opportunity to explore why this market is becoming such a big deal.As if decisions over diapers and bottles aren’t enough, I now have yet another tough decision to make since I’ve finally decided to deliver my third baby in Korea.I basically have two options: Either check myself into a maternity hotel immediately after getting discharged from hospital and stay there for two weeks or hire a live-in postpartum caregiver who will help ta

Year-end parties could hurt joints for middle-aged men

By Song Sang-hoThe time for year-end celebrations has arrived yet again. The recent trend has been for companies to organize unique events to celebrate the end of the year such as going to the movies or musicals, inviting family members for a celebration, and hosting cook-offs. Even so, “drinking” still seems to be the main event at the end of the year. Moderate consumption of alcohol offers health benefits, promoting the immune system and blood circulation. However, problems start to arise when people drink too much, and excess alcohol intake is quite frequent during year-end celebrations.Excess alcohol intake has an impact on the joints. For instance, it can lead to “avascular necrosis of the femoral head,” a condition where the hip bone, which allows us to walk, dies and starts to rot. This occurs when the supply of blood and oxygen to the femoral head, situated at the uppermost part of the hip bone, is inhibited. If this condition is not treated properly, perforation will start to occur in the bone and it will eventually collapse.Accordingly, the lengt
