On What It Takes to Be an Artist

By Seo Dong-shin Staff Reporter Method 1: Draw countless black lines on a white paper using a pencil, until the lines cover the entire paper so thickly that the black surface of the paper mirrors your face. It's good for boosting your confidence in drawing and improving your arm's strength. Method 2: Put a transparent paper on a selected ``exemplary'' sketch of a plaster bust. Carefully copy the lines beneath the paper until you have completely memorized the sketch and can perfectly reproduce it. These seem grueling methods to enhance one's creativity, the key virtue in the genre called art. But these are in fact orthodox methods that are being used to develop student's art skills to help them qualify for entrance to one of the prestigious art colleges such as those at Seoul National University or Hongik University. While high school students hoping to study humanities or social sciences cram for university entrance exams, those who want to enter art schools ``learn'' art in this way at private institutions, or hagwons. ``Paintings should be diverse; they are not object

Naru Arts Marks 2nd Year

By Bae Keun-min Staff Reporter In the cutthroat performing arts industry, it is hard for a small, low-budget theater complex like the Naru Arts Center to survive, especially when it's a late comer to the industry. The Naru in Kwangjin-gu was launched two years ago as the third arts center of the district office in Seoul. It will celebrate its anniversary on May 2. ``We all are delighted that the center has been recognized as a good venue for the performing arts in such a short time,'' Park Pyoung-jun, president of the center, told The Korea Times. ``The center has successfully become a neighborhood community arts center in the district despite a tight budget.'' The arts center, consisting of a main 700-seat theater, a smaller 200-seat theater and various art and sports facilities, has built a reputation for quality programs. The Naru is the first district arts center under proxy management, allowing it freedom in show scheduling and marketing. Moreover, it has attracted audiences with low-priced tickets, which were possible in part because 40 percent of the annua

Come May, Plunge Into Art With Family

By Seo Dong-shin Staff Reporter People who are not directly involved with or interested in art seldom visit art museums. But in May, responsible parents may feel compelled to take their children to a museum because of the Museum Festival. A total of 29 private art museums across the country will take part in the annual festival, which was inaugurated last year by the Korean Art Museum Association. Seoul has 10 such museums; Kyonggi Province, eight; Chungchong Provinces, seven; Cholla Provinces, three; and Kyongsang Provinces, one. ``For this festival, private art museums across the country hold customized exhibitions that best fits each museum's character, and enhance their educational function by providing programs related to those exhibitions,'' the association said in a statement.
