`We Will Rock You to Hit Stage in Korea

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter ``We Will Rock You,'' a jukebox musical, based on British rock band Queen's hit songs, will take to the stage in Korea next month. The musical, named after Queen's hit single of the same name, will be staged at Seongnam Arts Center from Feb. 2 to 24. The London tour team brings to Korea the show with its original cast members. It will be a first for both the team and the musical in the country. Written by British comedian and author Ben Elton in cooperation with the band's members Brian May and Roger Taylor, the musical was born through Queen's manager Jim Beach and the band's guitarist May discussion on the idea of creating a performance depicting the biographical story of vocalist Freddie Mercury who died in 1991. Incorporating Queen's songs, the script for the musical was eventually completed in 2001. The story revolves around a dystopian world in 2300 in a vaguely Orwellian world where musical instruments are forbidden and rock music is unknown ― instead people watch the same movies, listen to the same music, wear the same c

Young Print Artists Show Fresh Work

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Print art is often overlooked in the contemporary art scene, which is why the Korea Print Art Promotion Committee (KPAPC) continues to seek out and support young print artists. Five female artists were recently chosen as finalists for the KPAPC's 12th Belt New Artists Promotion Project 2008. ``Belt'' is meant to symbolize the KPAPC's role in promoting and developing print art by linking the artists, galleries and the public. Kwon Hye-jeong, Kim So-hee, Shin Kyoung-hee, Cho Hyun-suk and Choi Sun-joo are currently exhibiting their works at Gallery Artside, Dong San Gallery and Hana Art Gallery in Insa-dong. The exhibitions run through Jan. 15. The Korea Times talked with some of the artists about the themes in their works. Kwon said her highly detailed etchings, such as ``Never Ending Story,'' deal with relationships. ``It's about how I meet people, and what I feel when I meet them. I have different feelings like loneliness, happiness when I meet someone. I try to symbolize it in my work,'' she said. Kim's etchings, ``Sick of

Two French Actors to Show Off Music Styles

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter France seems to have it all. It has always been synonymous with thinkers and artists, attracting people's imagination over the centuries. On top of that, musicals, which have long been regarded as theatrical achievements of Broadway and the West End, are extending a new dimension into French creativity, enthralling musical buffs worldwide. Their explosive popularity can also be found in Korea through a rush of French musicals being staged here including ``Les Dix Commandements'' and ``Notre Dame de Paris.'' Damien Sargue, a French musical actor ― who played the role of Romeo in ``Romeo et Juliette,'' which was put on stage last year, is back in Seoul to participate in concerts, along with Cyril Niccolai ― who took the role of Benvolio, the cousin and friend of Romeo. ``For the concerts, we will show off our talents in our own music styles we have never shown before as singers rather than actors as in `Romeo et Juliette' to our Korean fans,'' Sargue said in an interview with The Korea Times in a Seoul cafe. Exhibit Seeks Meaning in Life

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter What makes life meaningful? This is a question that seeks to be answered in ``One Fine Day,'' an exhibition at the Rodin Gallery featuring the works of 12 artists from Korea, China and Japan. Through painting, sculpture, installation, photography and video, the artists express their own perspective of the world. The artists, whose ages range from their twenties to forties, attempt to find life's meaning by looking at the everyday lives of people, especially their problems, experiences, dreams and goals. Leeum Samsung Museum of Art curator Tae Hyun-sun said that ``although our life might not seem to have anything special, art finds beauty inside this and gives meaning and praise for life.'' ``This exhibition hopes to make us think about today's reality of life, the life that we are actually living, and to provide an opportunity to think about maintaining our reality of life or to make sense of our own individual dream and goal,'' Tae said, in the exhibition catalogue essay. Early Photos of Palaces on Display

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter Five hundred photographs of the Joseon Kingdom palaces and people of the time, which were taken during the Japanese colonial rule (1910-1945), are on display for the first time. The National Museum of Korea is holding an exhibition titled ``The Image of Joseon Palaces on Gelatin Dry Plates,'' which will run through Feb. 10. The museum sorted out 500 pieces related to the royal palaces among a collection of 38,000 gelatin dry plates containing photographic images of historical and archaeological sites, people and scenes of daily life. The gelatin dry plates are made by coating glass plates with a photosensitive emulsion containing silver halide and then drying them, before making a plastic film base such as cellulose nitrate. This was the original and modern photographic emulsion technique used for black and white photographic film, and is still used today. The images were part of the ``cultural policy'' established by the Japanese Government General of Joseon to tighten its control over the nation at that time. Although the col
