Natl Theater Unveils New Line-Up

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter The National Theater of Korea has unveiled its line-up of major performances for this year. Shin Sun-hi, 62, president of the state-run theater, told reporters in a press conference Tuesday that there will be more focus on staging high quality performances. ``This year marks three years into my term in office for this institution. I have tried to uplift the theater's effectiveness and heighten its status over last year,'' said Shin. She said, however, from now on, the theater will be more loyal to its original functions ― the basic principle of putting quality performances on stage. ``I think our theater has made a little progress in improving the system and effectiveness. But I think the theater should refrain from a profit policy under the market-oriented system and instead seek better quality theatrical arts. Hi-Seoul Festival to Go Seasonal

By Kwon Mee-yoo Staff Reporter The sixth Hi-Seoul will become a year-round festival that will promote four different concepts for Korea's four seasons. Beginning in 2003, the festival was held in May every year. But now the festival will be held throughout the year featuring four different themes for each season, beginning with the theme of ``Palace'' for its spring festival, the Seoul Foundation for Arts and Culture, the festival organizer, announced Thursday. ``Palace,'' which is expected to link the past and the future for festivalgoers will run from May 4 to 11. Directed by renowned Korean dancer and choreographer Ahn Eun-mi, a digital version of a palace will be built on Seoul Plaza in front of City Hall. ``Palace of May'' is going to be a new digital festival palace, open to everyone. An LED grid will be installed over the sky of Seoul Plaza and a light and media show will be screened at Seoul City Hall. Exhibit Shows Joseon Womens Culture

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter What did women do in their leisure time during the Joseon Kingdom (1392-1910)? Many people might think the traditional restraints of everyday life under Confucianism, which prevailed at the time, didn't allow Joseon women to spare much time. Staying in women's quarters, they expressed their woes and pathos through piecing together fabric, developing it into the highly refined art of embroidery. Embroidery was the highest state of intellectual pursuit of women who had to lead cloistered lives during the era. Needlework was one of the few ways they expressed their aesthetic desires and inspirations under the constrained social atmosphere. To show off the sophisticated form of ornamentations imbued with tactile qualities, the Museum of Korean Embroidery is now holding a special exhibition titled ``Journey to Korean Women's Culture,'' presenting about 80 posters used at exhibitions both at home and abroad over the last 30 years. Paik Nam-june Remembered 2 Years After Death

By Lee Hyo-won, Kwon Mee-yoo Staff Reporters It has been two years since the world bid farewell to the celebrated video artist Paik Nam-june (1932-2006), and a ceremony marking the anniversary of his death will be held Jan. 29 at Bongeunsa Temple, southern Seoul. Some of Paik's ashes were placed in the Buddhist shrine after he passed away in Miami, Florida in 2006. Paik's widow, Shigeko Kubota, 71, will attend the event. A bronze ``Death Mask'' of the late artist, sculpted and cast in New York in 1994 by his close friend Han Yong-jin, will also be on display. Hankuk Art Museum will hold a memorial ceremony for Paik on Jan. 29, before opening an exhibition about him. It will be a homage from 13 artists, including Kubota's video art. Hwang Shows Life of Never-Ending Portrait

The exhibition ``And Life Goes On …'' at Gallery Hyundai and next door at the Do Ha Gun features around 50 of Hwang's major works, from the 1980s until the present. Art critic Yoon Jin-seop has described Hwang as ``an artist of the never-ending present, an artist who dreams of a continuous transformation even today.'' ``For Hwang, painting is a bucket of memories, a bucket that draws up the conscious or subconscious from the depths. They can be brilliant or gloomy and dark, but mixed in the bucket are love for the self and compassion for fellow humans,'' Yoon said. Hwang's style may be considered pop art because of her use of bright primary colors and cartoonish images. You can gaze at her works for a long time, and you won't be bored. Hwang Reaffirms His Musical Talent

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter There is no big tension between characters, no speedy scene changes and no diverse backdrops. Instead, there is a simple stage set based on minimal design, one man and 15 women characters. With minimal theatrical elements, the musical, ``Nine'' kicked off its more than one-month run with an opening performance Tuesday. The number ``9'' that is projected on a big screen fades away and the musical begins with Italian genius film director Guido Contini, played by actor Hwang Jung-min, talking to himself. The scene then depicts the intertwining reality and fantasy of Guido's life with 15 female characters each talking to him simultaneously. The musical is based on an Italian play by Mario Fratti inspired by Federico Fellini's autobiographical film ``8 1/2'' and focuses on the film director Guido Contini. The first Korean rendition deals with Guido's struggles at the age of 40, which thrusts him into an emotional tailspin that threatens to destroy his personal and professional life.
