Modern Korean Theater Turns 100

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter ``Eunsegye'' (The Silver World) by Lee In-jik, was staged in Wongaksa ― now Chongdong Theater, the first modern theater in Seoul on Nov. 15 in 1908. This play paved the way for a new era in theater, improving on the Korean traditional opera. Since then, the Korean theater scene has witnessed vicissitudes marked by turbulent times over the last century. Now, it is facing mixed emotions as it commemorates the 100th anniversary of its establishment as the waning industry of the theatrical arena is dwarfed by the booming musical industry and light-hearted shows. The National Theater Association of Korea (NTAK) will celebrate the anniversary of the nation's contemporary theater with various events and projects throughout this year. ``Namsadangeui Haneul'' (Sky of Namsadang) will be the first to take the stage for the year-long event at ArKo Arts Center, central Seoul, starting from March 27, World Theater's Day. `Dollhouse Brings Experimental Theater

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter Innovative American theater director Lee Breuer's production of ``Dollhouse'' will hit the stage in Seoul next month. ``Dollhouse,'' which is based on Henrik Ibsen's ``A Doll's House,'' is a cutting-edge post-modern feminist statement by Breuer. Breuer and his partner, Ruth Maleczech, are founding members of the avant-garde theater company Mabou Mines based in New York. He has directed over 30 plays, including Mabou Mines``Dollhouse'' which won an Obie Award for Best Director and ``The Gospel at Colonus,'' ``Peter and Wendy,'' and Mabou Mines ``Red Beads.'' Through the deconstruction and reinterpretation of classic texts, he joined the ranks of experimental theater directors of the 1970s, helping to create a postmodern theatrical style, along with Maleczech, Richard Foreman, JoAnne Akalaitis and Elizabeth LeCompte. ``Dollhouse'' has been thought of as the representative work of Breuer since it premiered in New York in 2003 and was then invited to various international festivals such as the Edinburgh Festival in Britain and Theater

Houssels for their dedication to the company. Three pairs of dancers showed their interpretation of life through fluid movements. The choreography was strong and simple, and was a perfect start to the show. The next performance was SBT's ``Remembering of You'' was choreographed to commemorate Roy Tobias. Ceramics Masterpieces in Seoul

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Some of the world's most exquisite and precious ceramics have made the long journey from the Victoria and Albert Museum (V&A) in London to Seoul. There are 117 ceramic pieces currently on display at the ``Masterpieces in Ceramics from the V&A" at the Korea Foundation Cultural Center Gallery, through June 23. This is a rare opportunity to learn about the history of ceramics, by seeing ancient artifacts from Egypt and China, and the delicate porcelain from Germany, England and France, to modern-day pottery. ``So much of the history of ceramics, is about the East, Korea, Japan and China. We always wanted to do an exhibition in Korea because we have a Korean collection. For no obvious reason, we have never done an exhibition in Korea before. We've done exhibitions in China and Japan, so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to start this ceramics exhibition in a major Asian city like Seoul," V&A deputy director Ian Blatchford told The Korea Times. Blatchford said many of the pieces at the exhibition are being shown overseas for the

New Space Embraces Amateur Artists

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter An art gallery is a space that displays the results of artistic creativity. But there is an apparent gap between the art world and ordinary people in the conventional art gallery. Stripping such distance is an unusual art gallery, Jazzy's Multi Art Space (Jazzy MAS), which opened in Seoul Dec. 15. There, you can feel the creative and dynamic energy in the open space. The gallery has launched its initial project: the first center dedicated to amateur artists and students to further promote artistic exchange and creation. Kim Min-jae, director of the gallery, said that she established the place to give more opportunities to young amateur artists; especially students who cannot afford to hold a solo exhibition. ``It is expensive to hold a solo exhibition for many young artist-aspirants in Seoul. The multi-purpose art space is established in the high profile area of Garosu-gil in Sinsa
