By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter ``Art Map,'' the first English-language map guide to museum and art exhibitions in Seoul, is now available. The first edition of Art Map covers all on-going and up-coming exhibitions in March and April in Seoul's art districts. These art districts include Insa-dong, Sagan-dong, Gwanghwamun, Pyungchang-dong, Sinsa-dong, Yongsan, Cheongdam-dong, Seocho-dong and the Hongik University area. Photographer Atta Kim, Questioning Human Existence

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Photographer Atta Kim believes that ``all that exists will eventually disappear.'' A photograph is meant to capture an image, but Kim is interested in taking photographs that show how objects and humans disappear. The photographs, on display at Kim's solo exhibition ``ON-AIR" at the Rodin Gallery, explore his philosophy of human existence. ``I began with the core concept that every single existing being in the universe will eventually disappear. I tried to compare this concept to the nature of photography, which tends to record and remember everything. I have used two types of processes to realize this comparison: one is to employ very long exposures to make all the moving objects within a scene disappear. The other is to digitally superimpose many different images so that they are subsumed within a new, composite image,'' Kim said, in the exhibition catalogue. In his photographs, there are no cars or people in New York's busy Times Square, and there are no crowds in the markets in Delhi, India. He took these photographs using

Independence Fighter An: the Musical

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter The year 2009 will mark the 100th anniversary of Korean independent activist An Jung-geun's assassination of Japan's first Prime Minister Ito Hirobumi on a railway platform in Harbin, Manchuria Oct. 26 in 1909. This was after Japan forced the Eulsa Treaty on Korea in 1905 with Korea on the verge of annexation by Japan. An was then executed in Ryojun, China in 1910 for the incident. His remains are yet to be brought back home. However, the story of his dreams and spirit with which he fought for the independence and peace of Asia will be revived next year in a musical, ``Hero.'' There have been several films and dramas about An, but never has there been a musical. The epic musical, based on An and Ito, will be produced by Acom International with production costs of about 5 billion won. Acom International produced the widely successful ``The Last Empress.'' Production began in 2004, and the crew is gearing up to stage it next year with prominent creative team members. The creative team took a field tour of Vladivostok, Ryojun and Dalian

Kim Joo-won on Juliet, Ballet and Art

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter As one of the most memorable and beautiful love stories of all time, ``Romeo and Juliet'' has been portrayed in movies, performances and songs. The tragic love story will once again be staged this spring through ballet, and Korea's celebrated ballerina Kim Joo-won will bring the fragile yet strong spirited Juliet to life. Kim looked tired from ongoing rehearsals, but her eyes sparkled with excitement as she talked about the upcoming performance. ``It's `Romeo and Juliet.' Everybody already knows so much about the story. Being a familiar piece, I have to think about every little detail,'' she told The Korea Times. Although the plot seems familiar, the ballet performed by the Korea National Ballet will be different, as world-renowned choreographer Yuri Grigorovich directed the choreography. ``Grigorovich is a living legend. We have so much history together. I was very honored when he said that he thought of me as his Asian muse,'' Kim said. This is the first time to stage Grigorovich's ``Romeo and Juliet.'' His version is based o

Musical Pioneers Reunite in New Production

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter Long before the genre of musicals developed into the massive cash machine it is today, pioneering actors like Nam Kyung-joo and Choi Jung-won paid their dues on the grueling, wooden floors of shabby Daehangno theaters. Now there are less spotlights on them from their good old days, but they are still on stage with humble and consistent ``loyalty'' to their musical career. They are back in a new work, ``Soridoduk,'' a Korean homegrown musical written by Cho Gwang-hwa known for his previous work, the musical ``Claws of Angel.'' The reunion comes three years after Nam and Choi worked in ``I Love You.'' They share many things in common ― they began their musical careers with the art troupe in Lotte World, the theme park, in 1988. Musicals never gained much acceptance, even though there were loyal fans, they still received less attention compared to other genres. At that time, Nam and Choi were unrivaled musical heartthrobs who become synonymous with being considered musical stars. Now, two decades later, the 44-year-old Nam and the

Exhibition Shows Personal Narrative

By Kelli Donigan Contributing Writer A Korean volunteer and interpreter for G.O.A.'L who helps to translate and interpret for adoptees searching for their birth families on a KBS show called ``I Miss You,'' and a long-time friend of many Korean adoptees living in Seoul, Choi Eun-seong will hold her art exhibition this month in Itaewon at ``GreemZip,'' a local art gallery. The exhibition will run daily from 2 p.m.-10 p.m. through March 28 to April 1. Her latest collection of eight paintings entitled ``Being in an Unfamiliar Place'' takes a more mature and narrative approach compared to her previous abstract paintings. While her artwork has evolved, her philosophy to art has remained unchanged, that is, she still tries to approach art in accordance with how she perceives relationships between herself and others as well as her relationship with her surroundings. One group in particular that has had a strong influence on her relationships is Korean adoptees living in Korea. Six years ago, overseas Korean adoption was an unfamiliar novelty to her, but she became more curious
