Young Korean Artists Debut at doART

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Young and promising artists have been given a chance to participate in the ``Class of 2009'' exhibition at doART Seoul. Art schools hold graduation exhibitions as a way for new graduates to present their work to the general public. DoART's new exhibition, ``Class of 2009,'' is similar, featuring art works by 15 new art school graduates whose ages range from 23 to 28. DoART chose the artists from various art schools at Hongik University, Ewha Womans University and Dongguk University through the stringent review and evaluation of their works. DoArt is hoping that by holding the exhibition at its established gallery, the young artists will attract attention from art collectors, dealers and critics. ``Generally, an artist's graduation work is considered the fundamental building block of his or her career, containing their the purest passion. The sometimes amateurish craftsmanship and feeble theory are what make the work special, being the young artists' first work. `Class of 2009' is the debut stage for gifted artists with a lot o

Family Portraits in Multiple Layers

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Many Korean families go to photo studios to have family portraits made. More often that not, these photographs show parents and children wearing their best clothes while holding rigid poses and forced smiles. Family portraits do not always have to be so stiff and formal. Swiss artist Christoph Rihs makes unconventional portraits with multiple layers of images that somehow make the viewers feel the love and affection between family members. ``I have a different attitude to photography than other photographers. My point is not to have a frozen moment in time. I don't want to cling to one short moment. I try to be more in the flow of things. When I photograph people, I tell them to not be distracted by the camera, and just be themselves,'' he told The Korea Times over coffee at Seomi&Tuus Gallery, Cheongdam-dong. Rihs takes an unusual approach to family portraiture. He is unconcerned with what kind of poses families should strike or what they're wearing. Instead, he pays more attention to drawing out the family's natural qualities.

Jogye Temple to Replace Pagoda

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter The seven-story pagoda standing in front of the Jogye Temple of the Jogye Order, the nation's biggest Buddhism order, will be replaced by a traditional octagonal 10-story stone pagoda. ``The original seven-story pagoda, which was built in 1930 under Japanese colonial rule, does not represent the pagoda styles of the Silla or Goryeo Kingdoms. Many experts throughout the years had pointed out that it was more Japanese. We are planning to replace it in line with its 100th anniversary,'' a spokesperson from the temple explained. The pagoda was also criticized for being small compared to the grand main temple, which is 6.5 meters high and 2.5 meters wide. The new pagoda will stand 15.6 meters tall and 6.6 meters wide. The new pagoda will have the ``palbu shinjang,'' the eight gods that protect and represent the Buddhist faith, carved on the eight sides, while the first body of the pagoda will be decorated with a relief of eight Buddha sculptures. The ``sangnyunbu'' (finial) of the new pagoda will be plated with gold and the ``jinsin sar

52 Quintessential Modern Korean Designs Chosen

By Lee Hyo-won Staff Reporter The Korea Design Foundation has selected tin delivery containers, palace-shaped wedding halls and ``Red Devil'' T-shirts among 52 ``quintessentially Korean'' designs from the past half-century. The foundation, an organization within the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, announced the list Tuesday for the purpose of exploring and promoting Korea's design heritage. Selection standards were based on the items' influence on everyday Korean life and embodiment of the Korean spirit, rather than aesthetics or design value. Professors including Kang Hyeon-joo (Inha University), Kim Myung-hwan (Kaywon School of Art & Design) and Oh Chang-seop (Konkuk University) selected the 52 finalists from some 200 items submitted by design specialists. The ``cheolgabang,'' or tin delivery container widely used for delivering local Chinese cuisine, has no known inventor, but is deemed a ``perfect design,'' even from a cultural anthropological standpoint. Wedding plazas mimicking Western castles that dot the country are rooted in a fascination of the West,

Korean Photographers Capture Traces of War

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Even in today's modern Korea, there are still visible scars from Japanese colonial rule (1910-45) and the Korean War (1950-53). Often, these ``traces of war'' are often overlooked, if not ignored, by many. Five Korean photographers have captured these ``traces of war'' in everyday Korean life. Photographs by Kim Gyoo-sik, Noh Suntag, Back Seung-woo, Lee Young-hoon and Jeon Jae-hong are part of the ``39 (2)'' Korean contemporary photo exhibition at the Artsonje Center. Curated by Paradigm Shift's Han Keum-hyun, the exhibit's title 39 (2) refers to Article 39, Clause 2 of the Korean Constitution, which states: ``No citizen shall be treated unfavorably on account of the fulfillment of his obligation of military service.'' ``The images of war and military culture face diverse circumstances in ordinary life, which clash with individual and collective situations in current Korean society. Those images exist in the middle of ordinary life such as magazines, toys, buildings and commercial events, connected with capitalist structure and in

Retro Musical Boom Hits Stage

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter Bell-bottomed trousers, a nickel silverware lunchbox, roller-skating rink, black school uniform and disco music might remind you of the 1970s and 80s. A retro boom that began last year on stage is expected to continue this year, attracting an older generation. Musicals such as ``Really Really Like You,'' ``Go! Waikiki'' and ``Midnight Serenade,'' set in the 1970s and 80s, are hitting the stage. The musicals and their memorable hit songs from the era resonate on stage, along with retro dance moves and fashion items, arousing nostalgia. ``Really Really Like You,'' based on a '70s hit film of the same name, is on stage at the National Theater of Korea until Jan. 25 and will move to Hoam Art Hall from Jan. 29 through Feb. 22. After premiering last June, the musical drew about 100,000 audience members and toured around 12 cities, including Busan, Daegu and Daejeon. Starring celebrated performers such as Park Hae-mi, Cho Gap-gyeong, Park Sang-myeon and Kim Beop-rae, the musical shows the love, hope and frustration of high school studen
