Canadian Artist Makes Timeless Paintings

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Canadian artist Sylvain Tremblay's hauntingly beautiful paintings are filled with emaciated human forms reminiscent of Alberto Giacometti's sculptures and rich colors that evoke Gustav Klimt's paintings. Yet the entire composition is transformed into something that is uniquely Tremblay's. A graphic illustrator-turned-artist, Tremblay knew he wanted to create something different from what other artists were doing, but never thought his experiments in painting would amount to anything. ``I was always experimenting. When I was making it, I thought nobody would like it. But I liked it and wanted to do it, so I continued doing it. I was surprised when people liked it," he told The Korea Times over coffee at the Opera Gallery in Cheongdam-dong, southern Seoul last week. The 42-year-old artist was in town for the opening of his first exhibition in Seoul. It was his 25th show, having staged exhibitions in New York, Paris, London, Singapore and Hong Kong. Tremblay, who was born in Quebec, Canada, said his parents and siblings were no

Eddie Martinezs First Exhibit in Korea

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Interview, a hip American magazine, recently featured artist Eddie Martinez as one of the artists to watch in 2009. ``His idiosyncratic drawing style is deceptively simple and has the magical, faux naive quality of Paul Klee,'' the magazine wrote. The 31-year-old artist is generating a lot of buzz in the art world for his exuberant paintings inhabited with comic book-like characters and characterized by intriguing forms. The Korea Times met with Martinez, who was in town last week to attend the opening of his first solo exhibition in Korea at the Seomi&Tuus Gallery, Cheongdam-dong. Born in Groton, Connecticut, Martinez said he was always interested in art. ``Even when I was playing sports, I always gravitated towards the graphics, forms and colors. I started skateboarding, there's always a huge presence of art in that with the skateboards and graphics. `The Simpsons,' when it came out, that was a huge influence on me, and comic books, Garfield, Ziggy and Calvin and Hobbes. I was just drawing and painting, doing graffiti and stuff

Natl Theater to Extend Daytime Programs

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter The National Theater of Korea will extend daytime shows to draw a wider audience and place more emphasis on traditional performances. Lim Youn-chul, new president of the theater, said that he would turn the theater into a cultural epicenter through various programs, particularly traditional performances. ``Our traditional music and dances were suppressed during the Japanese colonial period and after the liberation, Western music dominated the Korean music scene, so we haven't paid attention to our traditional music. Our theater is supposed to present traditional content with modern art forms to improve our appeal to the public. I'll be more committed to this duty,'' Lim told reporters during a press conference. The theater will introduce the daytime traditional programs to reach to a wider fan base, including housewives and students. The organization will set up the gukak (traditional music) concerts, under the guidance of experts, at 11 a.m. every third Monday of every month from March to December. The concerts will run under dif

Experimental Video at DoBaeBacSa

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter When most people go to Itaewon, they head to the bars, restaurants, brunch spots or shops. Itaewon is not exactly known for its art scene, but an unconventional art group, DoBaeBacSa, is hoping to inject a bit of artistic and creative sensibility in the area. Located next to the Seoul Grand Mosque, DoBaeBacSa is nothing like the sleek, commercial art galleries in Cheongdam-dong. If not for the small sign, people might think DoBaeBacSa was just an abandoned hole-in-the-wall. Yuon In-mo, the curator, said they really wanted to have an exhibition space for experimental art along the once-vibrant Goblin Market Street. It was the gritty character and rustic charm of the old shops, rundown houses and neighborhood market that attracted them to the area. Even DoBaeBacSa's choice of art exhibitions is quite different. Its current centerpiece, ``To and From (Ocean),'' features a 14-minute, 34-second video by U.S.-based artists Naotaka Hiro and Sid M. Duenas. ``In-mo told me about this space (DoBaeBacSa) and I thought this piece was a pe

Paik, Kang Join in Multiple Dialogue

By Cathy Rose A. Garcia Staff Reporter Three years after the death of the ``father of video art'' Paik Nam-june, the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea is remembering his legacy with a joint exhibition with another internationally acclaimed artist Kang Ik-joong. ``Multiple/Dialogue'' opened at the museum in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, last week. The exhibition shows the interplay between Kang's ``Samramansang,'' (All Creations) featuring his ``3 x 3 inches'' works and Paik's ``The More The Better,'' an 18-meter video tower that is a permanent installation in the museum. Visitors will first see the tower made of 1,003 television monitors flashing Paik's video images, located in the middle of what the museum calls the ``ramp core,'' a spiral corridor that leads to the different galleries. The corridor walls are covered with an almost overwhelming array of Kang's small painted squares. ``Viewers are invited to participate in the dialogue between the two artists as they experience Paik's constantly blinking video images on one hand, and on the other, the endless

Sungnyemun Site to Be Open to Public Tomorrow

By Chung Ah-young Staff Reporter It has been one year since Sungnyemun, Seoul's 600-year-old landmark gate listed as National Treasure No.1, was destroyed by fire. With the scars of ruined national pride deeply inscribed in the hearts of Koreans, all efforts are under way to reconstruct the dismantled gate to its near-original shape. A gigantic metal wall and temporary installations now surround the site. To mark the one year since the collapse of the gate following an arson attack, the site will be open to the public Feb. 10 to raise awareness of the importance of cultural heritage. How Is Restoration Proceeding? The Cultural Heritage Administration said restoration of the gate will be undertaken in three phases. The first phase of preserving the fire-stricken site was completed last May. Now, the second phase of investigation, excavation and design is underway. Digging will resume soon to discover the exact location of walls, roads and ponds that used to surround the gate in the past. A design is expected to be finished in November and the third phase of

Alice and Don Quixote to Dazzle Fans

By Han Sang-hee Staff Reporter Two of Korea's prominent ballet troupes, the Universal Ballet Company (UBC) and the Seoul Ballet Theater (SBT), are starting the New Year with some of their trademark works, ``Don Quixote'' and ``Alice in Wonderland'' respectively. The UBC celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, and the company is looking forward to another fruitful season starting off with one of its best works. Making its debut in 1869 as a ballet performance at the Bolshoi Theater in Russia, ``Don Quixote'' was introduced to Korean fans by the UBC in 1997. Choreographed by former artistic director to the UBC, Oleg Vinogradov, the Spanish tale was chosen as the ``Best Dance Performance'' of that year among local dance critics. Last year, local fans had the chance to watch the famed American Ballet Theater's version and the UBC will bring similar thrills and excitement through their best dancers, including Hwang Hye-min and Kang Ye-na. An interesting, and a helpful, feature will be the appearance of UBC general director Julia H. Moon 30 minutes before the perfor
