    1,138 graduates receive degrees at University of Seoul's commencement ceremony

    The University of Seoul held its August 2026 commencement ceremony at its campus on Aug. 21, the university said Friday. According to the university, a total of 1,138 graduates received their degrees: 601 bachelor’s degrees, 464 master’s degrees and 73 doctoral degrees. Graduates, their families, faculty, staff, alumni and other distinguished guests attended the event to celebrate the graduates’ new beginnings. Among the 122 undergraduate graduates who achieved outstanding academic results, 10 received awards, including the Seoul Mayor’s Award, the Seoul Metropolitan Council Chairperson’s Award, the University President’s Award and the Alumni Association President’s Award. In his commencement speech, Won Yong-kul, president of the university, emphasized the capabilities graduates need in an era of rapid artificial intelligence (AI) transformation. “The key capabilities needed to thrive in the AI era are an understanding of AI’s principles and limitations and the ability to use it proactively and creativity, the ability to ask questions that AI cannot answer and the coura

    Sogang University holds 3MT Competition final for graduate students

    Sogang University held the final round of the 2026 SG 3MT Competition, a research communication competition, at its Seoul campus on Aug. 14. The university said the Graduate School Innovation Strategy Team organized the competition to promote graduate students’ research achievements and strengthen their global research communication. The event was also designed to support students’ participation in inter-university programs under the fourth phase of the government-led Brain Korea 21 (BK21) initiative. In addition, the competition was aimed at encouraging students’ participation in international competitions. SG 3MT stands for Sogang University Three Minute Thesis. The 3MT is a research presentation competition held at universities around the world, including Yale University and Stanford University. Participants are required to explain their thesis research within three minutes in a way that can be understood by a nonspecialist audience.     Foreign students in Korea call for support after graduation

    With more than 320,000 foreign nationals now studying in Korea, international students say the hardest part may begin when university support ends: finding jobs, changing visas and securing housing on their own. The Korea Times held a discussion, Thursday, with five students from Iran, China, Russia, India and the Philippines to hear about their experiences and discuss ways to improve support after graduation. The students said government and university programs often focus on life during enrollment, leaving graduates to navigate the transition into employment and longer-term residency with limited practical assistance. Ghazal Esmaeili, an Iranian master's student at Korea University who has spent three years in Korea as a Global Korea Scholarship recipient, said she had rarely worried about visa or daily-life issues because of scholarship and university support. But she said the end of that support would leave her responsible for finding a new visa status and employment, making the transition daunting.     Mock UN General Assembly to be held Saturday at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies

    Hankuk University of Foreign Studies’ (HUFS) International Model United Nations (HIMUN) will host its 50th General Assembly program on the university’s Seoul campus on Saturday. The university said Wednesday that the mock U.N. General Assembly will be held under the theme “International Standards of Economic Security and the Reconstruction of Global Supply Chains” at Obama Hall in the Minerva Complex. The assembly will be co-organized by the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy, the Korea Economic Research Institute and the Korean Association of Trade and Industry Studies.     Jeonbuk National University to train AI specialists to drive regional growth

    Jeonbuk National University is intensifying its efforts to nurture artificial intelligence (AI) experts at the master’s and doctoral levels capable of driving growth in key regional industries. The university said it plans to cultivate highly skilled “AI+X” professionals who can integrate AI with emerging industries through the research-oriented education system at the Graduate School of AI Convergence. It added that the plan is part of an initiative to transform the graduate school into one of the world’s top 100 AI-specialized graduate schools. To that end, the university will launch an “AI+X Advancement Program,” led by the Graduate School of AI Convergence, while significantly expanding its educational and research infrastructure.     Kookmin University Solar Car Team holds technical exchange with Hyundai Motor staff

    The Kookmin University Solar Car Team (KUST) held a technical exchange meeting with Hyundai Motor staff members at the university’s Seoul campus on Aug. 7 to prepare for its participation in the 2027 World Solar Challenge. The university said Thursday that eight Hyundai Motor staff members, including Park Jeong-hee, head of FC System Design Team 2, attended the meeting, along with Shin Dong-hoon, KUST’s faculty advisor and professor of mechanical engineering. The meeting was organized to provide KUST with technical advice on vehicle development as it prepares to compete in the World Solar Challenge, an international solar car competition to be held in Australia in August 2027. During the meeting, KUST students explained to Hyundai Motor’s staff the design direction and key technical elements of the vehicle they are currently developing, as well as their preparations for the competition.     English edition of Confucian philosopher Yi Ik's work published by Oxford University Press

    A research team at Sungkyunkwan University’s College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy has published a complete English translation of “Sachil Sinpyeon,” a philosophical work by Yi Ik, a prominent Confucian philosopher of the late Joseon period who went by the pen name Seongho. The University said Wednesday that the first English edition, “Seongho Yi Ik: The New Compilation of the Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions,” was published by Oxford University Press earlier this month. Yi’s work was translated into English by a research team comprising professors Back Young-sun and Park So-jeong and researcher Ha Na. Back, a professor of Eastern philosophy, serves as director of the Sungkyun Institute for Confucian Studies and East Asian Philosophy, while Park, a professor of Korean philosophy, is the director of the Institute of Korean Philosophy and Culture.     Jeonbuk National University launches global network of leading universities, companies

    Jeonbuk National University is launching its largest-ever international cooperation network, bringing together presidents of leading universities worldwide, global companies and international educational organizations. The university said Monday that it will establish a Global Advisory Committee comprising presidents of its overseas partner universities and launch major projects in collaboration with global companies and international organizations. The initiative represents an expanded cooperation model that goes beyond academic exchanges between universities by incorporating the expertise of global industries and international organizations.     Kookmin University team develops technology to optimize 3D object detection models for self-driving

    A Kookmin University research team has developed SharedKD, a technology that efficiently compresses 3D object detection models for autonomous driving, in collaboration with Hyundai Motor. The university said Tuesday that the findings were presented at the 2026 Design Automation Conference, a prestigious international conference in the field of design automation, held in Long Beach, California, from July 26-29. Kim Jang-ho, a professor at the university’s College of Computer Science, led the research team. Two master’s students at the Graduate School of AI and SW, Cho Hyun-joon and An Sang-ho, also participated in the study and contributed to the development of the technology. The university noted that the SharedKD technology differs from conventional knowledge distillation methods that use separate teacher and student models.     Joint research team develops world's 1st oral microbiome-based nanodrug for cancer immunotherapy

    Researchers at Sungkyunkwan University and the University of Michigan have developed the world’s first oral microbiome-based nanodrug for cancer immunotherapy. Sungkyunkwan University said Monday that the nanodrug significantly enhances the ability of immune cells to attack cancer cells by using natural metabolites produced by gut bacteria. The university’s research team, led by Cho Young-seok, professor at the School of Medicine, conducted a joint study with researchers at the University of Michigan, including James J. Moon, a professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences.     Sejong University expanding educational cooperation with ASEAN universities

    Sejong University is stepping up efforts to expand educational cooperation with universities across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The university said Monday that the efforts are part of the third batch of the CAMPUS Asia-AIMS program, which is designed to strengthen educational ties between Korea and ASEAN countries through student exchanges and joint academic programs. AIMS is short for Asian International Mobility for Students. The initiative is an intergovernmental multilateral student mobility program operated by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Center Specializing in Higher Education and Development. The program aims to establish a government-supported multilateral higher education cooperation framework similar to Europe’s Erasmus Program.     Jeonbuk National University spin-off to accelerate drug development through AI transformation

    Hops BioSciences, a startup spun off from Jeonbuk National University, has been selected for the Daonda Program, a global corporate collaboration initiative. The university said that through the program, the company will pursue an artificial intelligence (AI) transformation strategy aimed at integrating AI throughout the drug development process. The program is jointly operated by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups, the Korea Institute of Startup and Entrepreneurship Development and Dassault Systèmes, a global French software company.
