English edition of Confucian philosopher Yi Ik's work published by Oxford University Press

A research team at Sungkyunkwan University’s College of Confucian Studies and Eastern Philosophy has published a complete English translation of “Sachil Sinpyeon,” a philosophical work by Yi Ik, a prominent Confucian philosopher of the late Joseon period who went by the pen name Seongho. The University said Wednesday that the first English edition, “Seongho Yi Ik: The New Compilation of the Four Beginnings and Seven Emotions,” was published by Oxford University Press earlier this month. Yi’s work was translated into English by a research team comprising professors Back Young-sun and Park So-jeong and researcher Ha Na. Back, a professor of Eastern philosophy, serves as director of the Sungkyun Institute for Confucian Studies and East Asian Philosophy, while Park, a professor of Korean philosophy, is the director of the Institute of Korean Philosophy and Culture. The publication is the culmination of the Academic Translation of Korean Texts Project, a three-year initiative that began in September 2022, with support from the Ministry of Education and the Academy of Korean Studie

Kookmin University team develops technology to optimize 3D object detection models for self-driving

A Kookmin University research team has developed SharedKD, a technology that efficiently compresses 3D object detection models for autonomous driving, in collaboration with Hyundai Motor. The university said Tuesday that the findings were presented at the 2026 Design Automation Conference, a prestigious international conference in the field of design automation, held in Long Beach, California, from July 26-29. Kim Jang-ho, a professor at the university’s College of Computer Science, led the research team. Two master’s students at the Graduate School of AI and SW, Cho Hyun-joon and An Sang-ho, also participated in the study and contributed to the development of the technology. The university noted that the SharedKD technology differs from conventional knowledge distillation methods that use separate teacher and student models. Instead, SharedKD uses the entire network of a single 3D object detection model as the teacher model and a subnetwork generated through pruning as the student model. During training, SharedKD dynamically selects important structures based on gradients, enabling i

Joint research team develops world's 1st oral microbiome-based nanodrug for cancer immunotherapy

Researchers at Sungkyunkwan University and the University of Michigan have developed the world’s first oral microbiome-based nanodrug for cancer immunotherapy. Sungkyunkwan University said Monday that the nanodrug significantly enhances the ability of immune cells to attack cancer cells by using natural metabolites produced by gut bacteria. The university’s research team, led by Cho Young-seok, professor at the School of Medicine, conducted a joint study with researchers at the University of Michigan, including James J. Moon, a professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences. The findings were published Monday in Nature Nanotechnology, one of the world’s leading journals in nanoscience and medicine, under the title “Oral nano-delivery of a gut microbial metabolite enhances T cell stemness for cancer immunotherapy.” “This study is the first to uncover at the molecular level how gut microbes in our bodies enhance immune function and to translate this mechanism into an orally administered drug using nanotechnology,” Cho said. He added, “By turning microbial metabolites

Sejong University expanding educational cooperation with ASEAN universities

Sejong University is stepping up efforts to expand educational cooperation with universities across the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The university said Monday that the efforts are part of the third batch of the CAMPUS Asia-AIMS program, which is designed to strengthen educational ties between Korea and ASEAN countries through student exchanges and joint academic programs. AIMS is short for Asian International Mobility for Students. The initiative is an intergovernmental multilateral student mobility program operated by the Southeast Asian Ministers of Education Organization Regional Center Specializing in Higher Education and Development. The program aims to establish a government-supported multilateral higher education cooperation framework similar to Europe’s Erasmus Program. In Korea, the Ministry of Education oversees the program, while the Korean Council for University Education is responsible for selecting and evaluating participating universities. The program, which began in 2026, will focus on four key goals this year: expanding interdisciplinary education li

InterviewGKS becomes gateway to life in Korea for Uzbek scholar

Sodikov Normatjon had an older brother already studying in Korea when he began exploring scholarship options from Uzbekistan. That early window into Korean university life pointed him toward the Global Korea Scholarship (GKS) and made the prospect of moving abroad feel, if not easy, at least less uncertain. "GKS was a life-changing opportunity for me," Normatjon said during a recent interview with The Korea Times. "Studying abroad can bring financial and cultural uncertainties, but the scholarship took away much of that burden and allowed me to focus fully on my studies." Normatjon arrived in Korea in 2018 and the program has since helped him learn Korean, build a career and start a family in the country. Beyond financial support, the scholarship also helped him navigate the linguistic and cultural challenges of living abroad. Its Korean-language training and cultural programs gave him an early foundation for adapting to life in Korea and connecting with people in the country. "When I first came to Korea, I couldn't speak any Korean," he said. A yearlong language program at Silla Universi

Chungnam National University team develops technology to triple antimalarial compound yield

A Chungnam National University research team has developed a technology that more than triples the yield of a key antimalarial compound in sweet wormwood. The university said Thursday that the team has developed a highly efficient cultivation strategy to enhance the growth of sweet wormwood and increase its yield of artemisinin, a key ingredient in antimalarial drugs. The team was led by Park Jong-seok, a professor in the Department of Bio-AI Convergence and the Department of Horticulture Science. The method involves treating sweet wormwood (Artemisia annua) seedlings with ozonated water for just 40 seconds before transplanting. The findings were published earlier this month in Industrial Crops and Products, an international journal covering research on crops of industrial interest, under the title “Pre-transplant ozonated water soaking boosts growth and artemisinin yield in hydroponic Artemisia annua via hormesis.” Kim Sun-woo, a doctoral student in the Department of Bio-AI Convergence, was the first author, while Park was the corresponding author. “We confirmed that a single 40-sec
