Pyongyang Monument Erected to Mark Rohs Border-Crossing
South Korea has set up a monument next to the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), the border line with
North Korea, to commemorate President Roh Moo-hyun's brief but historical walk across it on his way to Pyongyang, Roh's office said Tuesday.
The 1.1-meter-high stone was spotted on television footage that showed Roh stepping out of a black sedan on the southern side of the Demilitarized Zone and slowly walking towards the MDL.
An inscription on the stone reads, "The Road to Peace and Prosperity," handwritten by the president, according to Kim Jeong-sup, a spokesman for Roh.
"It has been erected to mark the first-ever crossing of the MDL on foot by a South Korean president since the division of Korea," Kim told reporters. "The wording implies the president's commitment to the summit."
Presidential aides recommended the erection of the monument and Roh accepted it, Kim added.
