Tech leaders showcase technology at Quantum Korea 2026

Leading technology companies and institutions showcased their latest quantum technology developments at Quantum Korea 2026, which opened on Thursday, as the government seeks to position Korea as a global leader in quantum technology through various policy initiatives. Hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT since 2023, Quantum Korea will run through Saturday. This year’s edition focuses on how quantum technologies are being implemented and used in actual settings. A total of 56 companies and research organizations from 12 countries, including SK Telecom and KT, participated in the event, displaying quantum computer models and showcasing technologies that use quantum-based encryption and other security solutions. The telecom companies focused on quantum security solutions, as advances in quantum computing are expected to increase the risk of existing encryption systems being compromised. The key concept in their exhibitions was quantum key distribution (QKD) technology. QKD sends encryption keys using the quantum states of photons. Because observing a photon changes its quantum state,

Korea approves domestic operations of Starlink, OneWeb satellite internet services

Korea has approved requests from U.S. space firm SpaceX and Britain's OneWeb to launch their satellite internet services in the country, the science ministry said Friday. The government approved three separate cross-border supply agreements: one between SpaceX and Starlink Korea; a second between Hanwha Systems and OneWeb; and a third between KT Sat and OneWeb, the Ministry of Science and ICT said in a press release. To advance its Starlink service, SpaceX has established a local subsidiary, Starlink Korea. "The approval comes after reviewing three key factors: the potential for stable service provision, the expected impact on the domestic telecommunications market and consumer protection," the ministry said. Local frequencies became available for Starlink and OneWeb following a recent revision to the Radio Waves Act. As for the launch timeline, the ministry said services could begin as early as June or later this year. Starlink offers high-speed, low-latency internet service worldwide via a constellation of low Earth orbit (LEO) satellites. Under Korean law, foreign companies must sign a s

Will Samyang Foods defy 'emperor stock' curse?

The shares of Samyang Foods, the maker of the globally popular Buldak instant noodles, recently surpassed 1 million won ($723.43), earning the coveted title of "emperor stock." While the price has already surged tenfold in two years, brokerages scramble to raise their target prices, with some estimates reaching as high as 1.7 million won. Few believe the ride is over. Choi, a financial industry worker based in Yeouido, is confident the rally has room to continue. The 33-year-old said he has been recommending the stock to friends and colleagues since it was in the 600,000 won range. Yet, his advice has often been met with lukewarm responses. "With a single share now priced at over 1 million won, it’s understandably a bit burdensome to buy in at this point," he added. As the stock shows no signs of cooling, attention is turning to whether Samyang Foods will soon fall victim to the so-called "emperor stock curse." In Korea’s stock market, companies whose shares surpass the 1 million won mark have often faced sharp declines afterward, leaving peak-time investors to endure years of losses. F

Hanwha Ocean partners with Canada's security, defense firms for submarine project

Hanwha Ocean, a major Korean shipbuilder, said Friday it has partnered with Canadian security and maritime defense firms as part of its bid for Canada's submarine project. The company signed separate memorandums of understanding (MOUs) with BlackBerry and L3Harris MAPPS during CANSEC 2025, a Canadian defense exhibition held Wednesday and Thursday in Ottawa, according to Hanwha Ocean. Under the agreements, Hanwha Ocean will collaborate with BlackBerry on cybersecurity and with L3Harris MAPPS on integrated simulation and platform automation technologies. Hanwha Ocean said the partnerships aim to strengthen the company's position in the Canadian Patrol Submarine Project (CPSP), a submarine procurement program estimated to be worth up to 60 trillion won ($43.7 billion). Both Canadian companies have longstanding experience working with the Canadian Navy, it added. As part of its CPSP proposal, Hanwha Ocean showcased the KSS-III submarine, which can remain submerged for over three weeks and has an estimated range exceeding 7,000 nautical miles, during CANSEC 2025.

Seoul minister urges minimal impact of US tariffs on energy cooperation in meeting with US lawmakers

Industry Minister Ahn Duk-geun on Friday met with visiting U.S. lawmakers and urged measures to minimize negative impacts on bilateral cooperation in energy and supply chains from Washington's tariff scheme, his office said. Ahn held talks with Rep. Bruce Westerman (R-AR), chair of the committee; Rep. Nick Begich (R-Alaska); Rep. Harriet Hageman (R-WY); Rep. Celeste Maloy (R-UT); and Rep. Sarah Elfreth (D-MD) in a closed-door meeting in Seoul, according to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. The lawmakers are members of the Committee of Natural Resources in the U.S. House of Representatives. In the meeting, Ahn called for U.S. lawmakers' efforts to prevent the U.S. tariff measures from negatively affecting the two countries' collaboration in the industrial and energy sectors amid global supply chain uncertainties. Ahn also proposed strengthening energy cooperation to address trade imbalance and energy security issues, according to the ministry. Amid ongoing trade negotiations with Washington, Seoul has been considering expanding energy purchases from the United States to reduce it

SK hynix's non-manufacturing workers demand 8.25% wage hike in 2025 negotiations

Unionized non-manufacturing workers at chip giant SK hynix have entered wage negotiations with management, demanding an 8.25 percent pay increase, industry sources said Friday. The two sides held their first round of talks for the 2025 wage deal Wednesday, according to the sources. The union, one of the company's two major unions, demanded an 8.25 percent hike in salary and other benefits, citing the company's record-breaking performance last year. In 2024, the company and the union agreed on a 5.7 percent rise in wages. That year, SK hynix posted a record 19.8 trillion won ($14.4 billion) in net profit and 66.2 trillion won in sales on the back of rising demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips, including high bandwidth memory (HBM). The company gave additional bonuses totaling 1,500 percent of their base salary to its employees earlier this year. SK hynix holds separate wage negotiations with its unions for office and manufacturing workers.

TEST DRIVE Volkswagen Atlas SUV set to challenge Palisade with comfortable ride

YEONGJONG ISLAND, Incheon — Volkswagen Group Korea’s Atlas SUV aims to challenge the Hyundai Motor Palisade's stronghold in the local family vehicle market. The Atlas recently made its debut in Korea, seeking to capture the rising demand for three-row family SUVs. The vehicle was as comfortable and soft as typical sedans during a one-hour test drive from Seoul to the West Sea island. The Atlas looked to focus on ensuring driving comfort to appeal more to customers seeking a family vehicle. Unlike other common German vehicles, the Atlas exuded softer driving performance during drives both in a highway and a city. The SUV was equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter gasoline engine. Its maximum output reaches 273 horsepower. However, it felt like this was not sufficient for the huge SUV, with a length reaching 5,095 millimeters, the longest among vehicles available for sale in the same segment here. At some points along the highway, the Atlas displayed weak acceleration performance, which was the largest downside to the vehicle. Despite the shortcomings, it was still a decent option for t
