Termination of Homeplus rehabilitation endangers 12,000 workers

A court decision on Friday to terminate the rehabilitation proceedings for cash-strapped discount store chain Homeplus has raised concerns for the company's 12,000 employees who could lose their jobs. After Homeplus first filed for rehabilitation in March last year, the retailer began reducing its offline outlets. Of the 126 locations, only 67 stores remain, while the number of employees dropped from 20,000 to about 15,000 following the downsizing. After the company sold its supermarket unit Homeplus Express to NS Shopping last month to secure more cash, the workforce dropped again to 12,000 people. If Homeplus ultimately goes into bankruptcy, the government will activate a substitute payment program, which would allow it to advance unpaid wages of up to 21 million won ($13,600) per employee and later recover the funds. Employees who lose their jobs would also be eligible for unemployment benefits equivalent to 60 percent of their average wages over the three months preceding their termination. The government also plans to provide at least 440 billion won in emergency liquidity to help sm

SK On signs LFP cathode material supply deal with L&F for US ESS market

SK On, the battery arm of Korea's SK Group, said Friday it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with L&F for the supply of cathode materials for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, targeting the energy storage system (ESS) market in North America. Under the agreement, the two companies plan to discuss details, such as supply volume and period, with the goal of building a mid- to long-term partnership, according to SK On. SK On said the partnership with L&F, a major battery materials maker in Korea, aims to meet rising demand for LFP batteries in the United States and strengthen the company's push into the rapidly growing ESS sector. ESS installations in the U.S. have been accelerating in recent years, driven in part by the rise of AI-powered data centers that require reliable, scalable energy storage solutions. LFP batteries are increasingly favored for ESS applications due to their cost efficiency and strong safety characteristics. SK On has been expanding its LFP battery development as part of a broader strategy to diversify its battery chemistry portfolio. "This MOU marks

US interested in Korea's proposal on shipbuilding, semiconductor cooperation: trade minister

The United States has shown interest in Korea's proposal for manufacturing cooperation, particularly in the shipbuilding and semiconductor sectors, during recent trade talks, Seoul's top trade negotiator said Thursday. Trade Minister Yeo Han-koo briefed reporters on his trip to Washington, where he held tariff negotiations with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick, U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) Jamieson Greer and members of the U.S. Congress. His visit came as Korea enters the final three weeks of ongoing trade negotiations, after the Donald Trump administration said it would impose 25 percent reciprocal tariffs on Korean products beginning Aug. 1. During two meetings with Secretary Lutnick, Yeo emphasized Seoul's commitment to deepening manufacturing ties and urged the Trump administration to grant "favorable treatment" to Korean firms when considering tariffs on imported cars, steel and other products, according to his office. "The U.S. side was very interested in bilateral collaboration in the areas of shipbuilding and semiconductors, as they are crucial sectors in terms of indus

Prototype of Porsche Cayenne Electric shows powerful performance

Porsche is off to a solid start ahead of the official launch of the carmaker’s much-awaited Cayenne Electric, with its prototype proving racecar-like performance and practicality during a recent global test. The near-production prototype recently completed a record-setting run during a film shoot at Shelsley Walsh Hill Climb in England. In the latest test, the electric vehicle finished a course of some 914 meters in record time for a SUV. Tag Heuer Porsche Formula E Team simulator and development driver, Gabriela Jílková, piloted the vehicle, which tackled a steep gradient of 16.7 percent on a road width of only 3.5 meters. The Cayenne Electric prototype passed the test in 31.28 seconds. “This course is challenging and does not forgive mistakes,” Jílková said. “There are no run-off zones and little room for correction. However, the active suspension of the Cayenne Electric prototype gave enormous stability and precision. I felt completely confident at all times.” The SUV was equipped with Porsche Active Ride, a new suspension system through which the active chassis keeps the

Uncertainty grows over Korea’s Ukraine reconstruction plans amid probe into ex-first lady

Questions are mounting over whether companies and the Lee Jae Myung administration will continue their efforts in Ukraine's postwar reconstruction. Under the leadership of Lee, who has expressed skepticism about supporting the war-torn country, an investigation is also under way into former first lady Kim Keon Hee's alleged involvement in manipulating the stock prices of companies once rumored to be joining the reconstruction project. Amid these developments, the government and companies have recently adopted a low-key approach, refraining from promoting partnerships with Ukraine. Before becoming president, Lee criticized the Yoon Suk Yeol administration for lending money to Ukraine and opposed providing weapons to the country. In 2022, Lee attributed the war to what he called Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's immature foreign policies, though he later apologized to the Ukrainian people. Last November, Lee alleged that the former first couple intentionally boosted Sambu Construction's stock price in 2023 by abusing their power to mislead investors about the firm's connections to

Securities firms expand into currency exchange

Securities firms are rushing to attract customers other than stock traders in the currency exchange sector as they compete with commercial banks, which have long dominated the sector, according to industry officials on Thursday. The officials said Kiwoom Securities and Shinhan Securities will begin exchanging foreign currencies for a wider range of customers this year, while preparation for the service is underway for Samsung Securities, NH Investment & Securities and Mirae Asset Securities. Previously, securities firms were only allowed to exchange foreign currencies for the purposes of securities investment. The restriction limited them from serving a wider variety of customers, including travelers, international students and those running a business abroad. As a result, currency exchange was considered the exclusive domain of banks. The Ministry of Economy and Finance then revised the policy on foreign exchange transactions in 2023, opening the door wider for brokerage houses and other financial services companies to serve general customers if they meet certain criteria. LG CNS, in collaboration with artificial intelligence (AI) startup Cohere, has developed an inference-optimized large language model (LLM) boasting over 111 billion parameters. The new LLM model comes just about two months after the two companies introduced a Korean-specialized lightweight model with 7 billion parameters in May. The latest model supports 23 languages, including Korean, English and Chinese, as well as Hebrew and Persian. It has demonstrated superior performance in key areas, such as inferencing, outperforming several leading global models. “LG CNS collaborated with globally-recognized Cohere to develop this inference-type LLM to drive business innovation for local clients handling sensitive data in sectors such as finance and the public sector,” the company said in a press statement. An inference-optimized LLM is a model that uses multiple variables and patterns to infer logical predictions on complex problems. Goldman Sachs bets on Hongdae real estate amid Korea tourism boom

Goldman Sachs Alternatives has completed the acquisition of the Mercure Ambassador Seoul Hongdae, a 4-star hotel and mixed-use retail property located in the heart of Seoul, the company said Thursday. The hotel, which features 270 guest rooms, is currently operated by Seohan Tourism Development under the Mercure brand, part of the global hospitality group Accor. The property's lower floors house major domestic retail companies that are expanding their offline presence. The space is also set to serve as a flagship location for leading e-commerce firms to showcase and sell their private-label products. Goldman Sachs Alternatives noted that the acquisition is well positioned to capitalize on resurging inbound tourism to Korea and the continued global interest in Korean culture. According to the Korea Tourism Organization, international visitor arrivals climbed to 16.3 million in 2024 — a 48 percent year-on-year increase — bringing the country close to prepandemic levels. Regional data further shows that Seoul's Mapo District, where the property is located, attracted 8.8 million internat
