Termination of Homeplus rehabilitation endangers 12,000 workers

A court decision on Friday to terminate the rehabilitation proceedings for cash-strapped discount store chain Homeplus has raised concerns for the company's 12,000 employees who could lose their jobs. After Homeplus first filed for rehabilitation in March last year, the retailer began reducing its offline outlets. Of the 126 locations, only 67 stores remain, while the number of employees dropped from 20,000 to about 15,000 following the downsizing. After the company sold its supermarket unit Homeplus Express to NS Shopping last month to secure more cash, the workforce dropped again to 12,000 people. If Homeplus ultimately goes into bankruptcy, the government will activate a substitute payment program, which would allow it to advance unpaid wages of up to 21 million won ($13,600) per employee and later recover the funds. Employees who lose their jobs would also be eligible for unemployment benefits equivalent to 60 percent of their average wages over the three months preceding their termination. The government also plans to provide at least 440 billion won in emergency liquidity to help sm

Competition heats up to develop welding robots for shipyards

The rivalry between HD Hyundai and Hanwha in shipbuilding has evolved into a race to develop welding robots for shipyards. Subsidiaries of the two Korean conglomerates are working with international partners to secure technologies that address labor shortages and improve welder safety by reducing the need for work in confined spaces. Earlier this month, HD Hyundai Samho, a shipbuilder under HD Hyundai, announced a partnership with Germany's NEURA Robotics to develop four-legged and humanoid robots to advance welding automation at shipyards. Drawing on its experience with collaborative robots and automated equipment, HD Hyundai Samho will test the feasibility of NEURA Robotics’ humanoid technology for shipyard use. HD Hyundai Robotics, a robotics subsidiary, will support the collaboration by leveraging its years of data on automated welding. “This strategic partnership once again demonstrates the versatility of cognitive robots — even in one of the most demanding industrial environments in the world,” NEURA Robotics CEO David Reger said. On Thursday, Hanwha Robotics said it signed

InterviewFrom Excel to AI: L&DC transforms property development planning

Proptech, a portmanteau of property and technology, refers to technologies and services that leverage IT to enhance efficiency and create new value in the real estate industry. To apply this concept, Lee Doek-heang, also known as Henry Lee and the founder and CEO of L&DC, has focused on one of the most repetitive and labor-intensive areas in the industry: feasibility analysis for real estate development projects. Traditionally, this process required analysts to manually compare dozens of Excel files to evaluate each potential development site. Reviewing around 20 candidate sites in the Seoul metropolitan area could take one to two days per site, resulting in several weeks of work for a full review. The manual nature of the process not only made it time-consuming but also prone to human error and forcing teams to start over when mistakes occurred. Such inefficiencies can lead to missed investment opportunities or decisions based on incomplete or inaccurate information. To address these inefficiencies, L&DC developed the LanDup platform, which was officially launched in July last year. By s

Potential Korea-US shipbuilding ties linked to Washington’s China strategy: official

The United States has made Korea's participation in its containment policy against China a prerequisite for bilateral cooperation in the shipbuilding sector, one of the key items in the two countries' ongoing trade negotiations, a Seoul official said Friday. "The shipbuilding industry is one of the most notable areas where the U.S. seeks cooperation with Korea in terms of checking China," Chang Sung-gil, director general for trade policy at the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, said in a parliamentary forum on Seoul's negotiation strategy on tariff talks with the Donald Trump administration. "Washington views China's shipbuilding industry as a growing threat and is regarding Korea as a strategic partner to defend the American industry," he added. "The prerequisite for the shipbuilding cooperation is Korea's participation in Washington's efforts to contain China." Chang's remarks came as Seoul has been holding talks with the Trump administration on tariffs, non-tariff measures, industrial cooperation and other trade issues in a bid to get a full exemption or reductions in U.S. reci

Samsung Heavy supplies VR solution for ship simulation to Taiwan's Evergreen

Samsung Heavy Industries said Friday it has provided a virtual reality (VR) training system to Taiwan's Evergreen Marine to support operations of the shipping company's eco-friendly container vessels. The VR solution is designed to allow crew members to familiarize themselves with dual-fuel methanol-powered ships in a simulated environment before deployment at sea. Built using three-dimensional design data, the VR platform enables sailors to interact with ship systems and rehearse emergency situations, such as fuel leaks and onboard fires. Samsung Heavy said the system helps enhance safety, while reducing operational risks and maintenance costs associated with equipment malfunctions. In addition, the two companies will continue to collaborate on autonomous navigation technologies, including Samsung's Smart Autonomous Ship (SAS) platform.

Telecom companies urged to work closer with banks against phishing scams

Telecommunications companies are urged to take a more active role in countering voice phishing scams, as commercial banks have a limited ability to prevent the financial crimes, with a broader level of cooperation essential across industry borders, critics said Friday. They noted that multiple lenders have been offering insurance, free to their customers, to help victims of voice phishing scams make up losses. These companies include Shinhan Bank, which compensates up to 20 million won ($14,540), and Woori Bank, which compensates up to 10 million won, to each victim based on a police-issued report that shows the amount lost to a scam. Additionally, Shinhan Bank has adopted artificial intelligence (AI) to more thoroughly monitor any suspected financial transactions via its ATMs nationwide, while Woori Bank has been awarding outstanding employees who prevent voice phishing scams. “Despite all these efforts in the financial sector, voice phishing scams continue to persist as banking customers are still exposed to crimes that begin with a phone call,” a researcher at an advocate group fo

Battery makers rise as beneficiaries of Lee's industrial policies

The Lee Jae Myung administration is ramping up efforts to deliver on the president's pledge to invest in energy storage systems (ESS), raising hopes that Korean battery makers will capitalize on this opportunity to overcome challenges from sluggish electric vehicle (EV) demand. As the government highlights the role of ESS in its artificial intelligence (AI) and energy policies, investors are betting on a rebound for battery companies. The presidential office announced Thursday that the government will make major investments in ESS to prevent unstable power supplies at the upcoming national industrial complex, which will rely solely on renewable energy sources such as solar and offshore wind. This announcement follows the administration's decision to prioritize the creation of the so-called RE100 (renewable energy 100 percent) industrial complex, as Lee previously promised. “We are considering addressing the issue by increasing regional ESS,” said Kim Yong-beom, presidential chief of staff for policy, when asked about measures to counter intermittent power generation. “This approach

SK ecoplant sells part of stake in US fuel cell company

SK ecoplant Co., the construction arm of Korea's SK Group, has sold part of its stake in U.S.-based fuel cell company Bloom Energy Corp., sources said Friday. SK ecoplant offloaded 10 million common shares in Bloom Energy through an over-the-counter block trade at $27.60 per share Thursday, raising approximately $276 million. The company initially invested in Bloom Energy in 2021 and again in 2023 as part of a strategic partnership to expand its hydrogen fuel cell-based power generation business. SK ecoplant was known to hold about a 10 percent stake in the U.S. firm. The latest sale is reportedly equivalent to the shares it acquired in 2021. SK ecoplant said the sale was made to recoup investment following the expiration of a lock-up period. The company emphasized that its strategic partnership with Bloom Energy remains intact despite the partial stake sale.

Hyundai Mobis ranks 6th among global auto parts makers for 4th straight year

Despite slowing electric vehicle (EV) momentum and global economic uncertainty, Hyundai Mobis has maintained its No. 6 global ranking among auto parts suppliers for the fourth consecutive year, underscoring its resilient competitiveness. The rankings were published earlier this month in the 2025 Top Suppliers list by Automotive News, a leading global automotive publication. The list ranks the world’s top 100 auto parts suppliers based on the previous year’s sales to global automakers, excluding aftermarket revenue. Widely regarded as a measure of not only sales volume, but also production reliability, order-winning capacity and trusted relationships with global clients, the ranking once again highlights the strong position of Hyundai Mobis in the global market. Last year, Hyundai Mobis, the auto parts affiliate of Hyundai Motor Group, recorded $33 billion in original equipment sales, placing sixth globally behind Bosch of Germany, Denso of Japan, Magna of Canada, ZF of Germany and CATL of China. Since entering the top 10 for the first time in 2011, Hyundai Mobis has maintained a str

NEW YORK — Samsung Electronics held their Galaxy Tech Forum on Thursday to offer a glimpse into the digital health care services the company envisions through the Galaxy brand’s artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities. The event featured presentations and discussion sessions by Pak Hon, head of the digital health team at Samsung’s Mobile Experience Division; Michael McSherry, CEO of Xealth; Rasu Shrestha, executive vice president at U.S. hospital network Advocate Health; and Jim Pursley, CEO of musculoskeletal home care company Hinge Health. “There are a lot of challenges that exist in traditional health care that make it difficult to adopt digital tools, and so health systems are trying to manage cost increase (and) workforce shortage issues in the midst of chronic diseases increasing,” Pak said. “While Samsung is large, we’re not going to fix this problem. That’s just not enough. I think it’s going to take a village. This community that comes together, figures it out at scale.” During the forum, participants held in-depth discussions on the health issues gaining s
