Termination of Homeplus rehabilitation endangers 12,000 workers

A court decision on Friday to terminate the rehabilitation proceedings for cash-strapped discount store chain Homeplus has raised concerns for the company's 12,000 employees who could lose their jobs. After Homeplus first filed for rehabilitation in March last year, the retailer began reducing its offline outlets. Of the 126 locations, only 67 stores remain, while the number of employees dropped from 20,000 to about 15,000 following the downsizing. After the company sold its supermarket unit Homeplus Express to NS Shopping last month to secure more cash, the workforce dropped again to 12,000 people. If Homeplus ultimately goes into bankruptcy, the government will activate a substitute payment program, which would allow it to advance unpaid wages of up to 21 million won ($13,600) per employee and later recover the funds. Employees who lose their jobs would also be eligible for unemployment benefits equivalent to 60 percent of their average wages over the three months preceding their termination. The government also plans to provide at least 440 billion won in emergency liquidity to help sm

Korean shipbuilders' global order share rises in first half of the year amid US-China tension

Korean shipbuilders saw a significant rebound in their global order share in the first half amid U.S. sanctions targeting Chinese rivals, an industry report showed Tuesday. According to the report from the Export-Import Bank of Korea, South Korea secured 25.1 percent of global shipbuilding orders in terms of compensated gross tons (CGT) during the January-June period. It marks a substantial rise from 17.2 percent a year earlier, narrowing the gap with leader China from 51 percentage points to 26.7 percentage points. Last year, South Korea's share of global annual orders stood at 15 percent, the lowest in eight years. This year's rebound is largely attributed to recent U.S. trade measures. The U.S. Trade Representative (USTR) has introduced a policy to impose port entry fees on Chinese shipping companies and operators of Chinese-built vessels, effectively discouraging reliance on Chinese shipyards. In the first half of the year, container ships accounted for 53.3 percent of South Korea's total order volume of 4.87 million CGT. Last year, South Korean shipyards secured just two midsize-to-l

Tax, tariff threats push Korean firms to consider overseas supply chains

Korean firms, many of which are already grappling with U.S. tariff risks, are likely to face increasing pressure to relocate their supply chains abroad in an effort to avoid mounting tax burdens and other business-unfriendly regulations, experts and industry officials said Monday. Local conglomerates — mostly from the manufacturing sector — face growing risks following the inauguration of President Lee Jae Myung in June. The pro-labor Lee administration is seeking to raise the maximum corporate tax rate to 25 percent from 24 percent. The figure is much higher than the OECD average of 21.5 percent. The recent passage of a revision to the Commercial Act is also feared to weaken the management rights of many companies at a critical time, when they need to make bold and agile decisions amid unresolved tariff risks from the United States. Experts warn that major firms may be forced to consider relocating their supply chains overseas unless the government eases its strict business regulatory stance. “There is a growing need for local firms to relocate their businesses abroad to deal with

Nearly 100,000 people switch mobile carriers following subsidy ban lift: data

Nearly 100,000 people have switched their mobile carriers to a different company in just a few days after a controversial handset subsidy ban was lifted last week, industry data showed Monday. According to the data, 95,233 mobile number portability (MNP) transfers were recorded from Tuesday to Saturday. The government's ban on excessive handset subsidies, in place since 2014, was officially removed Tuesday, opening the door for mobile carriers to offer larger incentives and benefits to attract subscribers. On the first day of the change, 35,131 people switched carriers, a sharp increase from 10,703 the previous day. The daily figure then declined to 19,388 on Wednesday, followed by 13,496, 13,142 and 14,076 in subsequent days. Industry leader SK Telecom saw a net loss of 322 subscribers over the five-day period, while rivals KT and LG Uplus gained a net 522 and 70 new MNP members, respectively. SK Telecom has been struggling with a decline in subscriptions following a major data breach in April. The five-day MNP total remains far higher than the 39,000 transfers recorded during the first f

Don't miss out: Spend your consumption vouchers and get extra 50,000 won

Credit card companies have launched a joint promotional event, offering customers a chance to receive up to 50,000 won ($36) if they fully spend their government-issued voucher-based cash handouts by Aug. 31, industry officials said Monday. Organized collectively by card issuers, the event will be funded entirely through their own budgets, with a total prize pool of 2.5 billion won. The Lee Jae Myung administration began distributing the cash handouts last week as part of a broad effort to boost domestic consumption and reinvigorate the sluggish economy. Under the program, a one-time payment of 150,000 won or more is being provided to all Korean citizens and eligible foreign residents living in the country as of June 18, with additional support to be offered selectively based on income levels. Industry officials noted that consumers who use the full amount of their consumption vouchers issued by credit card companies by Aug. 31 will be automatically entered into the event, with no separate application required. A total of 310,000 winners will be selected — 10,000 will receive a 50,000

Redirecting money flow: Banks shift from real estate to innovation

Financial authorities and industry leaders vowed to shift the flow of funds away from real estate financing and channel it into more productive sectors, including high-tech industries and venture companies, officials said Monday. They made the pledge during a meeting led by Vice Chairman Kwon Dae-young of the Financial Services Commission (FSC), the country’s top financial regulator. The closed-door meeting brought together heads of major financial associations, such as the Korea Federation of Banks, the Korea Financial Investment Association, the Korea Life Insurance Association, the General Insurance Association of Korea and the Korea Federation of Savings Banks. The meeting focused on regulatory improvements and industry-specific initiatives to support a transition toward productive finance and was held in response to President Lee Jae Myung’s repeated calls for financial sector reform. Lee has criticized financial institutions for relying on “easy profits” from mortgage lending and underscored the importance of expanding investment. “There is a need to redirect capital from

Korea offers ‘MASGA’ project to avert tariffs

Korea's industry minister has made a surprise proposal to his American counterpart for a joint initiative aimed at revitalizing the U.S. shipbuilding industry — a last-ditch effort to avert the imposition of a 25 percent tariff on Korean imports, set to take effect this Friday. The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy said Monday that Minister Kim Jung-kwan proposed the project, titled "Make American Shipbuilding Great Again" (MASGA), to U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick. The name appears to pay homage to U.S. President Donald Trump’s signature slogan, "Make America Great Again." Kim met with Lutnick at the latter’s residence in New York on Friday (local time) and proposed the project, which is estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars. The initiative includes capital investments by Korean private shipbuilders in the United States, along with financial support from Korean state-run banks. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Economy and Finance Koo Yun-cheol, meanwhile, will travel to Washington on Tuesday for tariff talks with U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent
