Tesla tops imported car sales in Korea in H1

U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla was the best-selling imported passenger car brand in Korea in the first half of this year, capturing 30 percent of the market, industry data showed Friday. According to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA), 184,032 imported passenger cars were newly registered in the January-June period, up 33.2 percent from a year earlier. Tesla topped the list with 56,139 units, accounting for 30.5 percent of total imports. Its market share surged from 13.9 percent a year earlier, while sales soared 192 percent, allowing the U.S. EV maker to overtake German luxury brands. BMW ranked second with a 21.3 percent market share, followed by Mercedes-Benz at 16.2 percent. Both brands saw their shares decline by more than 5 percentage points from a year earlier. Chinese EV maker BYD came in fourth with a 6.3 percent share. In June, 38,059 imported passenger cars were newly registered, up 27.5 percent from a year earlier, driven by strong demand for EVs. The Tesla Model Y Long Range was the best-selling imported model last month with 5,155 units,

Top Korean firms face strike threat amid disputes over incentives

The specter of strikes is looming over SK hynix and Hyundai Motor as their respective labor unions remain dissatisfied with proposed incentives, adding to the headwinds facing the nation’s chip and automobile sectors, both already bracing for U.S. tariff pressures. According to industry officials Thursday, SK hynix’s two unions representing production workers have declared negotiations deadlocked, rejecting management’s proposed incentives. The company’s three labor unions, including its office workers’ union, staged a rally on Tuesday at the company’s headquarters in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province, demonstrating solidarity ahead of a potential general strike. The protest followed an earlier rally on Aug. 6. At SK hynix, the union representing technical and office workers negotiates wages separately from the unions representing production workers at its Icheon and Cheongju plants, though their demands are generally similar. Since May, the production unions and management have held 10 rounds of negotiations, but failed to narrow their differences over incentives, known as the “pr

Hoban, Harim suspected of joining forces against LS

Harim, Korea’s largest poultry processing company, appears to be supporting Hoban in the construction-to-media conglomerate’s apparent efforts to participate in the management of LS, which specializes in cables, power equipment, metal and machinery. According to a regulatory filing submitted earlier this week, Pan Ocean, the shipping subsidiary of Harim, acquired a 0.24 percent stake in LS Corp. for 12.3 billion won ($8.9 million) on May 16. Pan Ocean said its investment in LS Group's holding company is not intended to interfere with management. However, the investment has been widely interpreted as part of Harim’s efforts to assist Hoban, given their long-standing cooperation in various fields. In 2023, when Harim sought to acquire HMM, Korea’s largest container shipping company, Hoban attempted to finance the deal through a bond issuance. That same year, Hoban regained a 5.85 percent stake in Hanjin KAL, the parent company of Korean Air, from Pan Ocean, one year after selling the share to secure liquidity amid a real estate market slowdown. Industry officials expect Hoban, whic

Why SK Innovation chose Hyundai EVs amid 'Buy America' campaign

SK Innovation's recent decision to replace its company cars with Hyundai Motor electric vehicles (EVs) was in contrast to expectations that SK Group affiliates would follow Chairman Chey Tae-won's recommendation to buy automobiles from General Motors or other U.S. carmakers to help counter trade pressure from the Donald Trump administration. The intermediate holding company overseeing SK Group’s petrochemical and energy businesses recently instructed all executives to choose between the IONIQ 9 and eG80 as their new company vehicles. Both Hyundai EVs are powered by batteries made by SK On, an SK Innovation affiliate. SK Innovation plans to begin replacing its fleet next month, aiming to complete the transition by the end of the year. “Amid the global economic slowdown and weak EV demand, the domestic EV industry has faced difficulties,” an SK Innovation official said. “We made this decision to boost EV adoption in Korea by ensuring all our executives use EVs.” In his capacity as the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI) chairman, Chey signed a memorandum of understandin

Homeplus to close 15 stores, offer unpaid leave amid corporate rehabilitation

Homeplus, Korea's second largest discount supermarket chain, currently undergoing corporate rehabilitation, plans to gradually close 15 stores where lease negotiations have stalled, the company said Wednesday. The firm also plans to accept applications for unpaid leave from employees at its headquarters who wish to participate. “We are moving into an emergency survival management mode,” a Homeplus official said. “The business environment has not improved over the five months since entering the rehabilitation process. This step is necessary to address the situation amid mounting financial pressures.” The retail chain will proceed with the phased closure of 15 of its 68 leased stores where lease negotiations have not progressed. The affected stores include Siheung, Gayang, Ilsan, Gyesan, Ansan Gojan, Suwon Woncheon, Hwaseong Dongtan, Cheonan Sinbang, Munhwa, Jeonju Wansan, Dongchon, Jangrim, Busan Gamman, Ulsan Buk-gu and Ulsan Nam-gu branches. Homeplus has operated more than half of its stores — 68 out of 126 — as leased locations. Following the closure of the Bucheon Sangdong

Burger King penalized for forced sales of cleaning products, tomatoes

BKR, the operator of Burger King’s Korean business, was slapped with 300 million won ($220,000) fine for forcing its franchisees to purchase specific cleaning products and tomatoes from designated suppliers, the Fair Trade Commission (FTC) said Wednesday. The company had ordered its franchisees to buy 15 types of cleaners and tomatoes from its headquarters-designated suppliers since 2013. BKR did not properly inform franchise owners that using “unapproved” items could result in penalties, according to the latest investigation from the antitrust watchdog. The cleaning products and tomatoes were introduced as “recommended” items that franchise owners could independently purchase from other suppliers as long as they met the firm’s internal standards. However, BKR ultimately forced them to use cleaning products from a specific U.S. brand and tomatoes from its internally approved domestic suppliers. The items were only available through BKR’s internal purchasing system, the investigation found. BKR conducted inspections to monitor whether each franchisee used the designated prod

Korea to establish nationwide 'energy expressway' by 2040s

Korea aims to establish a nationwide "energy expressway" by the 2040s as part of efforts to respond to soaring demand for electricity sparked by the growth of artificial intelligence (AI) and expand the use of renewable energy, officials said Wednesday. The "energy expressway" project refers to a government plan to build high-voltage direct current (HVDC) infrastructure across the nation. HVDC is a next-generation power technology that lowers the inefficiency of long-distance power transmissions and helps with the integration of renewable energy from different sources. The initiative was announced as part of the presidential state affairs planning committee's policy road map for the Lee Jae Myung administration. Under the plan, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy will first construct advanced infrastructure along the west coast, which will house renewable energy clusters, in the 2030s, before extending it to the south and east coasts to form a U-shaped energy corridor covering the entire nation by the 2040s, according to the presidential committee. To this end, the government plan

Korean Air, Vietnam Airlines to join force in cargo business

Korean Air and Vietnam Airlines will strengthen their partnership in cargo business, as part of bilateral efforts to meet increasing freight demand in Southeast Asia, the Korean flag carrier said Wednesday. Under the latest memorandum of understanding, both airlines will utilize Vietnam’s Long Thanh International Airport as a key base for cargo cooperation. The partnership was clinched Tuesday on the sidelines of the Korea-Vietnam Business Forum in Seoul. The location of the airport, currently under construction near Vietnam’s commercial hub of Ho Chi Minh City, is considered to have strategic benefits. The region has geographical proximity with a number of other major Asian markets, such as Malaysia and Singapore. The two airlines also agreed to build a facility for maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) at the airport. The MRO center will offer services such as aircraft maintenance, component repair and cabin renovation. Both airlines will also join forces to educate tech personnel to handle services at the facility. Korean Air has a competitive edge with decades-long experience in

Hana Bank, BIDV partner to expand cross-border QR payment services

Hana Bank said Wednesday it signed an agreement with Vietnam's largest state-owned commercial bank to promote cross-border QR payment services. The Korean bank said it signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development of Vietnam (BIDV) during the Korea-Vietnam Business Forum in Seoul on Tuesday. The agreement outlines the terms of their expanded partnership, following Hana’s acquisition of a 15 percent stake in BIDV in 2019. Their digital finance collaboration has been managed by GLN International, Hana Bank’s fintech arm. For instance, GLN has operated a QR code-based cash withdrawal service in Vietnam since 2022, allowing users to withdraw cash from approximately 2,100 BIDV ATMs nationwide using the Hana One Q app — all without a physical card. “In this context, the new MOU is expected to further deepen digital financial cooperation between the two countries by enabling individuals and businesses to access financial services more easily and securely,” Hana Bank CEO Lee Ho-seong said. “We aim to establish a cross-border
