Tesla tops imported car sales in Korea in H1

U.S. electric vehicle (EV) maker Tesla was the best-selling imported passenger car brand in Korea in the first half of this year, capturing 30 percent of the market, industry data showed Friday. According to the Korea Automobile Importers & Distributors Association (KAIDA), 184,032 imported passenger cars were newly registered in the January-June period, up 33.2 percent from a year earlier. Tesla topped the list with 56,139 units, accounting for 30.5 percent of total imports. Its market share surged from 13.9 percent a year earlier, while sales soared 192 percent, allowing the U.S. EV maker to overtake German luxury brands. BMW ranked second with a 21.3 percent market share, followed by Mercedes-Benz at 16.2 percent. Both brands saw their shares decline by more than 5 percentage points from a year earlier. Chinese EV maker BYD came in fourth with a 6.3 percent share. In June, 38,059 imported passenger cars were newly registered, up 27.5 percent from a year earlier, driven by strong demand for EVs. The Tesla Model Y Long Range was the best-selling imported model last month with 5,155 units,

Naver, Kakao chart divergent AI paths for 2nd half

Entering the second half of the year with record-breaking second quarter earnings, Korea’s two leading tech giants, Naver and Kakao, are pushing to build on their momentum with sharply contrasting artificial intelligence (AI)-driven business models. Naver is focusing on global expansion through its sovereign AI strategy while deepening AI integration into its existing services, whereas Kakao is leveraging its vast domestic user base to infuse AI into everyday life, spanning messaging, e-commerce, advertising and more. Naver has placed its bets on sovereign AI, which refers to locally developed, self-owned AI technology, as the foundation for its global expansion drive. The company aims to extend its reach beyond Asia and the Middle East into new territories such as Africa, reinforcing its presence with high-profile projects, including building digital twin platforms in Saudi Arabia and an AI data center in Morocco. A digital twin is a technology that creates a dynamic virtual replica of real-world environments, optimized for urban planning. Alongside international reach, Naver is doubl

Netmarble aims to extend recovery momentum with new IP

Game studio Netmarble achieved a noticeable recovery in profitability for the first half of this year due to the high popularity its newest titles. The company seeks to extend its recovery momentum with seven new games, including three based on its own intellectual property (IP) scheduled for later this year. According to its regulatory filing Sunday, the company posted 1.34 trillion won ($963.58 million) in sales and 150.8 billion won in operating profit in the first half of 2025. The sales inched down by 1.9 percent compared to a year earlier, but operating profits improved 31.2 percent during the same period. So far, Netmarble has built its gaming portfolio with not only its own IP but also those from outside developers. While this has contributed to top-line growth, heavy royalty payments for external IP have made it difficult to improve operating margins. However, in the first half of this year, two new titles based on Netmarble’s own IP — RF Online Next and Seven Knights Re:BIRTH — became hits, delivering profitability improvement. Netmarble seeks to extend the improvement in i

Foreign tourists can ride Jeju buses with overseas Visa cards

Foreign visitors to Jeju Island can now ride buses without buying a separate ticket or transit card, simply by using a Visa card issued in their home countries. According to Visa, Thursday, the transit system has been implemented on all Jeju buses starting this month. This project marks the first application of such a system to public transportation in Korea. It was launched as part of an agreement signed in March between Visa and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, with the goal of advancing the island's payment infrastructure. Through this initiative, Jeju aims to enhance convenience for foreign tourists and take the lead in developing new business models built around the innovative payment system. The open-loop transit payment system allows passengers to tap and pay fares using credit, debit or prepaid cards based on the EMV global payment standard. Customers can also use various devices, including smartphones and smartwatches. The system was first introduced in London in 2012 and has since been adopted in major cities such as New York, Hong Kong and Singapore. In 2024 alone, Visa p

80th Liberation Day Korea faces mounting calls for economic coalition with Japan

The proposal to form a coalition with Japan to establish an economic community similar to the European Union sparked a sensation earlier this year, when Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry and SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won introduced the idea. For Koreans aware that the Empire of Japan used the term "annexation" in the treaty forcibly signed in 1910 to colonize Korea, the concept of a "coalition" with Japan may sound uncomfortable. The intensifying U.S. protectionist trade policies under the Donald Trump administration, however, have justified Korea's renewed push for economic integration with Japan, propelling discussions on a free trade agreement (FTA) between the two neighboring Northeast Asian countries. "In the face of growing global protectionism and U.S. reciprocal tariffs, Korea and Japan must expand economic cooperation and work closely together," Chey said in May after meeting Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba in Tokyo. Although this year marks the 80th anniversary of Korea's liberation from Japanese colonial rule, business leaders in both countries have placed greater

HMM to buy back, cancel 2 tril. won in outstanding shares

Korea's top container shipper, HMM, said Thursday it will buy back and cancel its own shares worth 2.14 trillion won ($1.54 billion) as part of its shareholder return policy. In a regulatory filing, the company said it will repurchase roughly 81.8 million shares, or 7.98 percent of its outstanding stock, between Aug. 18 and Sept. 12, and cancel them on Sept. 24. The move follows the company's January announcement of a plan to return over 2.5 trillion won to shareholders through dividends and buybacks within the year. The upcoming buyback and cancellation will be HMM's first since it entered a creditor-led management system in 2016 due to a liquidity crisis. (Yonhap)

Toss posts 35% revenue growth in first half of 2025

Viva Republica said Thursday that mobile financial service Toss posted over 1.2 trillion won ($866.8 million) in revenue during the first half of 2025, marking a 35.2 percent increase compared to the same period last year. "The growth momentum that began with the company's turn to profitability in 2024 has continued," the fintech firm stated. "Increased service usage from our strong 30 million user base, along with improved profitability in our core business segments, have driven overall performance growth." Operating profits reached 154.6 billion won, while net profits came in at 105.7 billion won, driven by robust performance in the consumer and merchant service divisions. The consumer services division generated 802.1 billion won in revenue, representing 64.9 percent of its total revenue in the first half. Dexter Studios becomes Korea’s first to deliver in-camera VFX for Hollywood project

Dexter Studios has partnered with Amazon’s MGM Studios to showcase its leading virtual production (VP) technology, becoming the first local studio to apply in-camera visual effects (ICVFX) to a Hollywood project. Dexter announced Thursday that it joined the production of Amazon Prime Video original series “Butterfly” and contributed ICVFX to the project. ICVFX is a virtual production technique where visual effects are captured in real time through the camera. The rendered backgrounds sync with the camera’s movement, allowing actors to be filmed in front of LED displays that show virtual environments. “Butterfly,” which was released Wednesday, is a six-part spy action series about a former American spy living in isolation in Korea, pursued by an active agent tasked with eliminating him. During its filming in Korea, Dexter used its VP technology to help film dynamic action scenes, including car and bike chases, not only shortening the turnaround time but also enhancing the quality of the scenes. The studio handled every phase from previsualization and film planning to the prod

Lawsuits against unions withdrawn under labor-friendly administration

Korean conglomerates are yielding to government and ruling party requests to reconcile with subcontracted workers, while foreign companies still watch with concern over the labor-friendly administration’s efforts to redefine “employer” and limit damages lawsuits against striking workers. Hyundai Steel recently withdrew a lawsuit seeking 4.6 billion won ($3.3 million) in damages from 461 subcontracted workers who staged a 50-day sit-in at its Dangjin steel mill in South Chungcheong Province in 2021. The decision follows pressure from the ruling Democratic Party of Korea (DPK), which urged Hyundai Steel and Hyundai Motor — both subsidiaries of Hyundai Motor Group — to drop suits filed against subcontracted workers. “This outcome comes from our union’s meeting with DPK lawmakers and our appeal about the unfair lawsuit, as the party moves to revise the Trade Union and Labor Relations Adjustment Act,” Hyundai Steel’s union for irregular workers in South Chungcheong Province said Wednesday in a message to members. With political pressure intensifying, speculation is mounting

FTC to suspend push to regulate US platform firms amid trade risk

The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) will temporarily suspend its push to regulate monopolistic platform firms from the United States amid Korea’s unsettled trade negotiation with the world’s largest economy, its chairman nominee said Thursday. “The antitrust authority cannot independently proceed with the so-called Online Platform Act at a time when the U.S., which has the most influential hegemonic power, makes unprecedentedly strong trade demands to Korea,” Ju Biung-ghi told reporters. The FTC chairman nominee said the commission will devise the best possible measures once the two countries conclude their detailed trade negotiations. The Online Platform Act is a regulation targeting market-dominant online platform firms here and abroad. The enactment of the regulation was one of President Lee Jae Myung’s major election pledges. However, the drive hit a snag when Lee took office in June, as uncertainties surrounding Korea-U.S. trade negotiations showed no signs of abating. Korea has since maintained a low profile in the push for the act, fearing that the country’s key industries
