Tech leaders showcase technology at Quantum Korea 2026

Leading technology companies and institutions showcased their latest quantum technology developments at Quantum Korea 2026, which opened on Thursday, as the government seeks to position Korea as a global leader in quantum technology through various policy initiatives. Hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT since 2023, Quantum Korea will run through Saturday. This year’s edition focuses on how quantum technologies are being implemented and used in actual settings. A total of 56 companies and research organizations from 12 countries, including SK Telecom and KT, participated in the event, displaying quantum computer models and showcasing technologies that use quantum-based encryption and other security solutions. The telecom companies focused on quantum security solutions, as advances in quantum computing are expected to increase the risk of existing encryption systems being compromised. The key concept in their exhibitions was quantum key distribution (QKD) technology. QKD sends encryption keys using the quantum states of photons. Because observing a photon changes its quantum state,

Korean tech selected as Brazil’s next-gen broadcasting standard

A broadcasting system utilizing Korean technology was chosen as Brazil’s next-generation broadcasting standard, paving the way for Korean companies to boost their export competitiveness in the South American market, the ICT ministry said Friday. According to the ministry, Brazil has recently adopted the DTV+ system, a next-generation broadcasting standard based on the U.S. Advanced Television Systems Committee’s (ATSC) ATSC 3.0. ATSC 3.0 uses the government-funded Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI)’s technologies, including multi-input multi-output and layered division multiplexing. The two technologies are designed to efficiently deliver data over limited spectrum, playing a crucial role in determining the hardware used to receive broadcasts on viewers’ TVs. Brazil is one of the biggest broadcast media markets in the world, with a terrestrial broadcasting direct reception rate that reaches 73 percent. When the country adopted digital broadcasting in 2006, it chose the Japanese ISDB-T standard, and was later joined by Argentina and other South American

Aviation safety investment up 5.7% in 2024; Jeju Air's plunges 36.5%

Investments by Korean airlines and airport operators in safety measures rose 5.7 percent in 2024 from a year earlier, though leading budget carrier Jeju Air recorded a sharp decline, the transport ministry said Friday. The combined investment by two airport operators and 16 air carriers in safety measures reached 6.17 trillion won ($4.45 billion) last year, up from 5.84 trillion won in 2023, according to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport. The ministry projected the figure will increase to 10.2 trillion won this year and 10.65 trillion won in 2026. By company, the country's two full-service carriers — Korean Air and Asiana Airlines — accounted for 75 percent, or 4.63 trillion won, of the total last year. Nine low-cost carriers' investments climbed 2.2 percent to 1.24 trillion won. Among them, Jeju Air and Air Busan were the only two budget carriers that reported reduced spending on safety measures, the release said. The remaining five are small aircraft operators. Jeju Air's investment fell 36.5 percent to 313.5 billion won, while that of Air Busan declined 23.3 percent

Paik Jong-won’s Theborn Korea referred to prosecution over farmland law violations

Theborn Korea, a restaurant franchise led by celebrity chef and TV personality Paik Jong-won, has been referred to prosecutors on charges of violating Korea’s farmland and food safety laws. The anti-corruption and economic crime unit of the South Chungcheong Provincial Police said on Thursday that it had referred Theborn Korea, its officials and staff at its Baekseok plant without detention on suspicion of violating the Farmland Act and the Livestock Products Sanitary Control Act. Authorities said the company operated a food factory in an agricultural promotion zone in Yesan County, South Chungcheong Province, where it produced and sold products using imported ingredients. Under the Farmland Act, food factories located within such zones must use domestically sourced agricultural and marine products. From September 2016 through March this year, the Baekseok plant allegedly used foreign ingredients such as Chinese fermented soybean blocks and soybeans imported from the United States, Canada and Australia to produce doenjang (soybean paste). The company halted operations at the facility

TEST DRIVE IONIQ 6 set to drive EV popularization as longest-range car

GOYANG, Gyeonggi Province — Hyundai Motor’s refreshed all-electric sedan, the new IONIQ 6, has returned with the eye-catching label of the electric vehicle (EV) with the longest driving range in Korea. The carmaker’s flagship electric sedan is capable of travelling up to 562 kilometers on a single charge, the longest among any EV available for sale here. Hyundai Motor expects the vehicle to help speed up the popularization of EVs in the local market. In a media event to introduce key features of the vehicle on Wednesday, the carmaker showcased the vehicle’s 84 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery, up from 77.4 kWh in the previous model. Along with the enhanced battery capacity, the carmaker achieved an impressively low drag coefficient of 0.21 to maximize the driving range. Vehicles with a lower drag coefficient are considered highly aerodynamic, helping them run with less air resistance. “We have been able to launch the longest-range EV by enhancing its battery capacity and aerodynamic performance,” a researcher at Hyundai Motor told reporters during the carmaker’s tech talk event

Trade commission recommends accepting Chinese steel companies' price hike pledge as anti-dumping measure

Korea's trade watchdog on Thursday recommended the government accept a proposal from Chinese steel companies to raise export prices of their hot-rolled carbon and alloy steel plates over the next five years as part of anti-dumping remedies. The Korea Trade Commission (KTC) said it has decided to make such a recommendation to the Ministry of Economy and Finance for nine Chinese steel exporters, including Baoshan Iron & Steel and Jiangsu Shagang Steel. The companies have proposed a price undertaking after the KTC reached a preliminary decision in February to impose anti-dumping duties, having determined that the exporters inflicted damage on the Korean steel industry by selling their products here at excessively low prices. The KTC said it will recommend the ministry levy anti-dumping tariffs of up to 34.1 percent for the next five years on other Chinese companies that did not make such proposals. Trade authorities launched an investigation into the case in October, three months after Hyundai Steel filed a complaint with the government against competing low-priced thick steel plate imports
