Hefty fines loom for Baemin, Coupang Eats as FTC rejects self-correction bids

The Fair Trade Commission (FTC) has rejected self-correction proposals from the country's top two food delivery platforms, Baedal Minjok, informally known as Baemin, and Coupang Eats, paving the way for fines that could amount to tens of billions of won over allegations that they abused their market dominance, the antitrust watchdog said Thursday. The regulatory authority rejected the companies’ applications for a consent decree — a mechanism that allows firms to resolve antitrust cases without admitting liability by offering voluntary remedies — ruling that they did not meet the legal requirements to initiate such a settlement process. The fines expected to be imposed on Baemin and Coupang are estimated at 239 billion won ($157 million) to 510 billion won, and 25 billion won to 42 billion won, respectively. Following the latest decision, the watchdog will resume its formal review to determine the illegality of the practices and the scale of sanctions. The watchdog’s probe into the two companies has focused on finding alleged anti-competitive practices, including unfair treatment

Lotte Global Logistics, Korea Post and Hanjin Logistics were named top performers in the government’s latest evaluation of postal and parcel services. The government said it assessed 19 companies in the country’s postal and parcel industry in the latest assessment, which has been conducted annually since 2014. The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said Wednesday that eight business-to-customer logistics companies in Korea received either A+ or A in the annual assessment. Lotte, Korea Post and Hanjin earned the highest A+ rating. Companies that received an A rating were Coupang Logistics Service, CJ Logistics, Kurly, Logen and Ilyang Logis. HiteJinro reintroduces Miller Genuine Draft to Korea

HiteJinro, Korea’s leading liquor maker, said Tuesday it has taken over domestic distribution of Miller Genuine Draft starting this month, bringing the American lager back to the Korean market. Miller Genuine Draft is a lager produced by Molson Coors Beverage Company, the global brewing conglomerate. Launched in 1985, the beer is brewed through a four-stage cold filtration process and contains 4.7 percent alcohol by volume. HiteJinro said the brand will be available in two formats: a 500 milliliter can for the retail channel and a 330 milliliter bottle for on-premise venues such as bars and restaurants. Distribution through both channels begins nationwide today. To mark its return to the Korean market, Miller Genuine Draft has updated its packaging. The redesign retains the brand's signature "M" logo while applying a brighter gold color scheme intended to reinforce its genuine image. An online marketing campaign tied to the brand's "Break the Mold" concept will also launch Tuesday through the brand's official Korean Instagram account. Hanwha Qcells expands US reach with solar sales to homebuilders

Hanwha Solutions said Tuesday that its Qcells division has launched Qcells New Homes, a unit that will supply solar panels and battery storage directly to homebuilders in the United States, expanding its footprint in the American residential energy market. Aiming to fill a gap in the residential clean energy market, the division will work with builders from the design phase, integrating solar and battery systems into new homes rather than retrofitting them — a model the company says cuts costs and simplifies installation. Qcells New Homes will initially launch in California, where a state mandate in effect since 2020 requires most newly built homes to include rooftop solar, before expanding nationwide. Homebuilders on the platform will receive solar panels manufactured at Qcells' Georgia factory along with domestically produced battery systems, permitting support, installation assistance and post-installation monitoring through a single point of contact. The company describes itself as the only direct-from-manufacturer solar and storage partner serving the new home construction market

CJ Logistics doubles down on Vietnam with full takeover of joint venture unit

CJ Logistics is tightening its hold on Vietnam’s fast-growing logistics sector, taking full control of a key joint venture as it pivots away from shipping toward higher-margin contract logistics. The company said Wednesday that it would acquire the remaining stake in its Vietnam-based affiliate, CJ Gemadept Logistics Holding, as part of a broader restructuring agreement with its longtime partner, Gemadept. The deal will give CJ Logistics 100 percent ownership of the unit, while transferring its stake in a separate shipping business back to Gemadept, effectively splitting the two operations and allowing each company to focus on its core strengths. CJ Logistics and Gemadept had jointly operated two entities since 2018: CJ Gemadept Logistics Holding, which oversees logistics operations, and CJ Gemadept Shipping Holding, which handles maritime transport. Before the restructuring, CJ Logistics held 50.9 percent of the logistics unit and 49 percent of the shipping unit. The agreement calls for a stake swap, with CJ Logistics taking the remaining 49.1 percent of the logistics unit and ceding

Media watchdog chief asks Google for efforts to support small app developers

The media watchdog chief on Wednesday called on Google to pursue shared growth in Korea's application ecosystem as the U.S. tech giant moves to revamp its commission policy for its app market. Kim Jong-cheol, chair of the Korea Media and Communications Commission (KMCC), met with Wilson White, vice president of global affairs at Google, in Gwacheon, Gyeonggi Province, to discuss areas of cooperation ahead of the implementation of the new commission policy, the watchdog said. In March, Google vowed to make major changes to its app store policy, including splitting its 30 percent commission into a 15-20 percent service fee and a 5 percent transaction fee while allowing third-party payment options. "We expect the app market ecosystem to experience tangible changes following Google's positive steps," Kim was quoted as saying during the meeting while asking the U.S. company to implement the new pricing in Korea earlier than scheduled in December. Kim also called on Google to come up with measures to promote shared growth across the ecosystem, including small and medium-sized developers. "We as

Online shopping sales in South Korea rose 5.9 percent from a year earlier in February, driven by strong sales in agricultural products during the Lunar New Year holiday period, government data showed Wednesday. The value of online shopping transactions totaled 22.6 trillion won ($15 billion) in February, up 1.3 trillion won from the same month last year, according to the data from the Ministry of Data and Statistics. It marked the highest figure for the month of February since the government started compiling such statistics in 2017, the ministry said. By item, agricultural goods, including meat and fisheries, led the sales, with the category growing 32.7 percent year-on-year thanks to the Lunar New Year holiday in February, the ministry said. Spending on culture and leisure services jumped 93.3 percent on-year, as more concerts took place during the three-day holiday period. Online purchases of cars and car accessories grew by 48.8 percent on-year, partly affected by a rise in electric vehicle (EV) sales, the ministry added.
