Utopia or dystopia? Governance, social consensus to shape future led by physical AI

As artificial intelligence (AI) expands from cyberspace into physical reality, the world is bracing for another profound transformation in the form of “physical AI,” a term that refers to AI systems that have physical forms that can interact with the real world. During a fireside chat at the AI Forum 2025, co-hosted by The Korea Times and the American Chamber of Commerce in Korea (AMCHAM Korea), Tuesday, experts said they are certain that physical AI will transform industry, manufacturing, health care and every other sector of human life. At the same time, they stressed that whether the future turns into “a utopia or a dystopia” will depend not on the technology itself but on governance and social consensus on how to embrace the change. “According to recent research, the digital AI market is projected to reach $1.8 trillion by 2030, but that of physical AI will amount to $50 trillion during the same period,” said professor Lim Jong-in of Korea University’s School of Cybersecurity. “The next industrial revolution hinges on the completion of physical AI.” Lim said the glo

Kakao faces backlash over data privacy violations in ad service

Kakao is under fire over its messaging app KakaoTalk’s corporate advertising service, facing accusations that the tech giant is misusing its users’ personal information and burdening them with data costs. Seoul YMCA released a statement on Monday, claiming that KakaoTalk had been infringing on its users’ right to privacy regarding their personal data. “When KakaoTalk users click on a new incoming message in their chat list, they are automatically exposed to ads. Kakao matches phone numbers provided by advertisers with users’ registered phone numbers from their accounts to target who gets the ads,” the organization said. “This amounts to using personal information beyond its intended purpose and violates individuals’ rights to determine how their personal data is handled.” The ad service, called Brand Message, is a business advertising tool that Kakao launched in May. It allows businesses to send promotional messages directly to KakaoTalk users who have previously agreed to receive company updates. The group alleges that Kakao cross-checks phone numbers against its user a

Kangwon National University professor develops 1st AI detector for bee mites

A research team led by Mo Chang-yeon, professor at Kangwon National University's Bio System Engineering Department, developed the world's first artificial intelligence (AI)-powered device to detect varroa mites, in collaboration with the Rural Development Administration (RDA). Varroa mites are parasitic pests that attack and feed on honeybees inside the hive, causing developmental damage and transmitting deadly viruses. They are considered the most destructive pest threatening honeybees worldwide and are recognized as the leading cause of mass honeybee die-offs during winters. The device, BeeSion, analyzes videos of hive frames using AI to find varroa mites in real time. Varroa mite control is extremely difficult, since the pests reside inside hives and are hard to detect, especially during summer. While traditional methods require over 30 minutes to inspect a single hive, BeeSion only takes about 30 seconds per frame and has an accuracy rate of 97.8 percent. The device can also simultaneously detect 16 other types of bee diseases and abnormalities, including chalkbrood infection, wing d

Apple seeks to chip away Galaxy's share with early launch of iPhone 17

Apple is hoping to chip away at Samsung Electronics' share in the Korean smartphone market by including the country in the list of first-wave launches for its upcoming iPhone 17 for the second time, following last year's release of the iPhone 16. The decision signals that Apple is doubling down in its attempt to challenge Samsung in its home market, widely considered a testbed for new items. According to telecom officials, Sunday, Apple is expected to unveil its latest iPhone model on Sept. 9 (U.S. time), with pre-orders opening on Sept. 12 in Korea and official sales starting on Sept. 19 at 8 a.m. (local time). After launching the iPhone 3GS as initial-release in Korea in 2009, Apple sidelined Korea from its first-launch schedule until the iPhone 16 rollout in 2024. Since last year, Apple has placed Korea at the front of the line for the iPhone 16 and 16e, alongside the United States, Japan, the United Kingdom and China. It also introduced localized updates, including Korean-language support in Apple Intelligence and the Find My feature. Industry officials said the shift in Apple's stra
