SK Telecom, Ericsson join hands to collaborate on AI-based mobile network tech, 6G

SK Telecom said Thursday it has partnered with Sweden-based telecommunications firm Ericsson to jointly develop artificial intelligence (AI)-driven mobile network technologies and advance sixth-generation (6G) communication technology development. Under a memorandum of understanding (MOU), the two companies will establish a cooperative framework to support the continued evolution of network technologies, SK Telecom said. They plan to promote practical applications of innovative technologies in fifth-generation (5G) environments while laying the groundwork for long-term 6G research and standardization. SK Telecom said the collaboration will focus on joint research and validation of cutting-edge network technologies, including AI-based radio access networks (AI-RAN), 5G enhancements, open and autonomous networks, security and 6G standardization. "Our collaboration with Ericsson will serve as a key driver for the evolution of AI-based networks and a crucial foundation for advancing into the 6G era," said Yu Tak-ki, head of network technology at SK Telecom.

Samsung tops global commercial display market for 17 straight years in 2025

Samsung Electronics has maintained its leadership in the global market for commercial display products for 17 straight years through 2025, amid efforts to expand its portfolio, the company said Thursday. The Korean tech giant said it accounted for 35.2 percent of the market in terms of the number of units sold in 2025, citing research conducted by industry tracker Omdia, and has maintained its leadership since taking the top position in 2009. Samsung Electronics said it sold a record 2.5 million units of commercial display products, excluding consumer TVs, in 2025. The company's commercial display lineup includes products such as smart signage and e-paper solutions. "This sustained performance reflects Samsung's focus on next-generation signage that combines advanced display hardware with cloud- and artificial ingelligence (AI)-based solutions in retail, corporate, education and hospitality environments," the company said in a release. Samsung Electronics said it will continue efforts to expand its presence in the sector by launching Samsung Spatial Signage displays this year, which offer

Industry ministers of S. Korea, China hold first talks in 4 years, discuss supply chains

Industry ministers of South Korea and China held talks Wednesday to discuss ways to stabilize supply chains amid heightening geopolitical uncertainties and promote bilateral cooperation in advanced industries, Seoul's industry ministry said. South Korean Industry Minister Kim Jung-kwan met with Chinese Minister of Industry and Information Technology Li Lecheng in Beijing to discuss ways to advance the two countries' industrial cooperation in advanced industries, such as semiconductors and batteries, according to Kim's office. Their talks marked the first such meeting between the two countries' industry ministers since 2022. In particular, Kim and Li explored measures to stabilize supply chains connecting the two countries in the battery industry, while agreeing to cooperate for the smooth operation of Korean companies' semiconductor facilities in China, the ministry said. Separately, Kim also met with Chinese Minister of Commerce Wang Wentao where they agreed to immediately activate their hotline channel in the event of logistics delays or disruptions in raw material supplies, according

SK hynix set to build autonomous chip plant by 2030 amid booming AI demand

SK hynix Inc. said it plans to establish an autonomous semiconductor manufacturing facility by 2030 to boost production capacity as it seeks to meet surging demand for artificial intelligence (AI) chips. "I think the biggest challenge today is that AI demand is growing very fast, but semiconductor manufacturing cannot expand at the same speed," Doh Seung-yong, head of digital transformation at SK hynix, said during a panel session at the ongoing GTC 2026 in San Jose, California, on Tuesday (local time). He said SK hynix is expanding capacity in South Korea and the United States to keep up with demand, but building more fabs is not the only solution. "New fabs take a long time to build and to ramp up. So we have to do two things at the same time: expand capacity and improve productivity in existing fabs," he said. "That is why SK hynix is moving toward an autonomous fab by 2030." He did not elaborate on the facility's location but said SK hynix is using Nvidia's Omniverse platform, an open platform for virtual collaboration and real-time simulation.

Samsung Electronics' unionized workers vote to strike over bonus

Unionized workers at Samsung Electronics on Wednesday voted to launch a general strike in May over performance-based bonuses, union officials said. In a vote that began March 9, 93.1 percent of 66,000 participants supported the strike plan. More than 73 percent of a combined 90,000 members of three labor unions, including the National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU), participated in the vote, officials said. Through the vote, unionized workers have secured the legal grounds for collective action after a government arbitration commission decided to halt mediation earlier this month. If realized, it would mark the second walkout since the tech giant's founding. The first strike, led by the NSEU, was launched in 2024, when workers demanded higher pay. The unionized workers have been engaged in negotiations with the management since November. They are calling for greater transparency in the criteria for calculating performance-based bonuses, the removal of a cap on bonuses and a 7 percent wage increase. Management has proposed measures to improve compensation and benefits, including a 6.2 perc

Privatization calls grow as KAI names new CEO

Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI), the military aircraft manufacturer controlled by the state-run Export-Import Bank of Korea (Eximbank), appointed Kim Jong-chool as CEO on Wednesday. His appointment put an end to KAI's eight-month leadership vacuum following the resignation of former CEO Kang Goo-young, known as a close ally of former President Yoon Suk Yeol. KAI’s shareholders and board members agreed that day to give the CEO post to Kim, a former Republic of Korea Air Force officer who worked for the Defense Acquisition Program Administration. Defense industry officials expect the government to resume efforts to privatize KAI under its new chief, as Hanwha and LIG have recently been mentioned as potential buyers of the controlling stake held by Eximbank. Although KAI is not directly owned by the government, it is effectively under state control because Eximbank holds the largest stake at 26.4 percent. The National Pension Service is the second-largest shareholder with an 8.5 percent stake. This structure has allowed the government to continue influencing KAI’s leadership appointment

Musinsa enforces zero-tolerance policy on fake labels

Fashion platform operator Musinsa is doubling down on its crackdown on fake labels and misleading product claims, warning of zero tolerance and permanent bans for any partner brands found violating the rules. Fraudulent relabeling, a scheme where low-cost goods are relabeled and sold as higher-quality or original designs at a higher cost, has been a chronic issue in the fashion industry, as most distributors have the tendency to downplay the problem. However, Musinsa is moving in the opposite direction, announcing it will “respond more decisively” on the issue on its official blog last week. The company recently launched an investigation after customer inquiries raised suspicions that certain partner brands had been selling relabeled low-cost products despite previously claiming to produce items in-house. The shopping platforms, including major players like W Concept, Ably and 29CM, have long struggled to inspect products before sale, citing the logistical difficulty of vetting every product from third-party sellers. However, a more serious concern lies in how platforms respond once m

Coway strengthens grip on ice water dispenser market with public-use lineup

Major home appliance maker Coway has launched new ice water dispensers to cement its dominance in the domestic market for the popular appliance. The company said Wednesday that it has introduced four new stand-type ice water dispenser models designed for use in nonresidential settings. The new lineup targets a wide range of customers, including businesses of varying sizes and high-traffic public spaces. A key strength of the products is their significantly enhanced ice-making capacity, both in volume and speed. The top-tier model, Ice Stand 5.2, can store up to 5.2 kilograms of ice and produce up to 1,659 ice cubes — or 20 kilograms — per day, generating new ice every 12 minutes. According to the company, this represents a 94 percent increase in volume and a 31 percent improvement in production speed compared to its predecessor. Another model, Ice Stand 3.0, offers a storage capacity of 3 kilograms and can produce up to 1,246 ice cubes, or 13.6 kilograms, per day — roughly double the output of the previous version. These upgraded capacities allow the products to meet the demands of
