Paldo to launch Pororo kids drinks in Indonesia

Korean food company Paldo said Tuesday it will launch its iconic children's beverage Pororo in Indonesia this year through a partnership with a local company. Paldo signed an agreement with Indonesia's leading food and distribution company, Indofood Group, to supply Pororo drinks for local children, starting in July, the company said in a press release. The drinks will be distributed through the sales network of Indomarco, a distribution unit of Indofood Group, it said. In 2018, Paldo obtained halal certification in Indonesia for the Pororo drinks as part of its global expansion strategy. Halal food refers to products that are prepared according to Islamic Sharia law, which governs not only the handling of meat but also other foods, such as fruits and vegetables. Paldo expects the new partnership in Indonesia will help it expand its presence in east Asia's food and beverage markets. Last month, the company also signed a preliminary agreement with Thailand's leading conglomerate, Charoen Pokphand (CP) Group, to jointly develop new products, expand offline sales networks and launch localized

LG Chem mulls selling water solutions unit amid prolonged petrochemical slump

LG Chem is moving to sell its water solutions division, which produces reverse osmosis (RO) membrane filters used for industrial desalination, industry sources said Monday. According to the sources, the company has reportedly selected Glenwood Private Equity as the preferred bidder and is in negotiations over the deal. The division generates approximately 200 billion won ($138.6 million) in annual sales, and the sale price is expected to reach around 1 trillion won. LG Chem entered the RO membrane market after acquiring U.S.-based NanoH2O in 2014 and has built production facilities at its Cheongju plant. It currently ranks second globally in market share after Japan's Toray. Although LG Chem had announced plans to double the size of the business within five years following the expansion of the Cheongju plant in 2023, it has shifted its focus toward strengthening its financial position amid a prolonged slump in its core petrochemical sector. The petrochemical industry has been grappling with a prolonged downturn driven by a supply glut from China and increasing uncertainties fueled by U.S.

SK Telecom users irritated by delayed USIM replacement

SK Telecom users have vented frustration and anger over the firm’s delayed replacement of universal subscriber identity module (USIM) cards following a major customer data leak last week. The nation’s largest telecom operator started offering the free USIM replacements at its retail stores nationwide Monday, but most of the stores in major areas in Seoul ended up inconveniencing customers due to a limited supply of USIM cards on the first day of the offer. As widely expected, dozens of customers were seen lining up in front of multiple SK Telecom retail stores in the morning amid fears of their smartphones possibly being exposed to additional cyberattacks unless they change their USIM cards. Around 50 people were standing in line at the firm’s retail store near Seoul City Hall at around 11 a.m. Some of them expressed complaints over the delayed replacement service. “I have no choice but to wait here, as my work is sensitive to mobile security,” an official in his 30s, who identified himself only with his surname Kim, said. “I have to work extra hours, as it appears to take at

Hanjin, LS join forces amid conflicts with Hoban

The proverb "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" may describe the unexpected alliance between two opponents of Hoban Group — Hanjin Group, better known as the parent company of Korean Air, and LS Group, which specializes in cables, power equipment, metal and machinery. Amid their ongoing disputes with the construction-to-media conglomerate, Hanjin and LS announced Monday that they signed a memorandum of understanding for the mutual growth and interests of their respective shareholders. Hoban Construction, the group's flagship construction unit, has emerged as an antagonist of Hanjin Group Chairman Cho Won-tae following its acquisition of shares in Hanjin KAL — the group's holding firm — from KCGI and Pan Ocean. KCGI is an asset management company that backed Cho's younger sister, former Korean Air Vice President Cho Hyun-ah, also known by her English name Heather, when she attempted in 2020 to wrest control of the group from her brother. As the second-largest shareholder of Hanjin KAL with a 17.9 percent stake, the construction firm rejected a proposal at last month's shareholders
