Celltrion forecasts 137% year-on-year growth in 2025 profits

Celltrion said Wednesday it expects to post record-high earnings for the fourth quarter of 2025, raising expectations that its annual operating profit will grow 137 percent year-on-year to surpass the 1 trillion won ($693 million) mark for the first time in its history. The biopharmaceutical firm released its earnings guidance for the fourth quarter, projecting 1.28 trillion won in sales and 472.2 billion won in operating profit. The figures represent year-on-year growth of 20.7 percent in sales and 140.4 percent in operating profit, marking the company’s highest-ever quarterly earnings. The operating margin also reaches 36.8 percent. If the figures are confirmed after an auditors’ review, the company’s annual sales would reach 4.12 trillion won in 2025, up 15.7 percent year-on-year, while operating profit would stand at 1.17 trillion won, up 136.9 percent from a year earlier. This would mark the first time that annual revenue tops 4 trillion won and operating profit surpasses 1 trillion won. Celltrion attributed the brisk numbers to rapid growth in global sales of its new high-val

Hanwha Systems wins $27.7 mil. combat system supply deal from Philippine Navy

Hanwha Systems, a defense solutions unit of Korea's Hanwha Group, said Wednesday it has won a 40 billion-won ($27.7 million) contract to supply advanced combat management systems (CMS) to the Philippine Navy, marking the fifth such deal with the Southeast Asian country. Under the deal, Hanwha Systems will provide CMS and tactical data links (TDL) for the Philippine Navy's two 3,200-ton next-generation frigates. A CMS works as the brain of a vessel and is designed to integrate all equipment, like sensors, weapons and communications systems, into one single system to help counter threats more efficiently. A TDL enables naval units to share tactical information in real time. Hanwha Systems said the equipment will be custom tailored to the Philippines' operational environment, which spans across over 7,600 islands. The latest deal adds to Hanwha Systems' past systems supply contracts with the Philippine Navy since 2017. Hanwha Systems said it has developed the CMS entirely with proprietary technology and has supplied them to a wide range of surface and underwater vessels used by the Korean Na

Coupang claims perpetrator saved data of some 3,000 customers in SEC filing despite criticism

E-commerce giant Coupang has claimed the perpetrator in a massive data leak incident saved limited information from about 3,000 customer accounts in a filing to the U.S. securities watchdog, despite criticism in Korea of the U.S.-listed firm's internal investigation results. The filing to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) on Monday came after Coupang made the same claim in last week's announcement on the outcome of its own probe, which was only met with a reaffirmation by Seoul's Science Minister Bae Kyung-hoon that the data leak affected more than 33 million customers in Korea. "The investigation to date indicates that while approximately 33 million accounts were accessed, the perpetrator only saved limited data from approximately 3,000 customer accounts, and such customer data has been deleted without having been shared with a third party," Coupang said in the SEC filing. Unverified by the Korean investigation authorities, Coupang's own assessment has drawn criticism about a "self-investigation" into the incident that damaged public trust in the online platform, on whi

New Musso pickup truck carries legacy of classic 2002 model

KG Mobility (KGM) unveiled its new Musso pickup truck during a two-day media preview from Monday to Tuesday at KGM Experience Center Ilsan in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province. According to KGM, the new vehicle inherits the legacy of the SsangYong Musso Sports, a pickup introduced in 2002 by KGM’s predecessor, SsangYong Motor, and recognized as Korea’s first sport utility truck. After announcing prices for each trim next month, KGM plans to begin sales shortly afterward. “The new Musso combines the toughness of a pickup with modern technology and convenience, reinventing itself as a powerful and dynamic vehicle,” a KGM official said. “By offering a variety of options that reflect customers’ needs, we aim to deliver a wide range of utility suitable for both leisure and business.” Customers can choose between two powertrains — diesel and gasoline — depending on their driving preferences. Interview'Reliance on e-commerce will cut short K-beauty's global boom'

Relying on e-commerce platforms will not sustain the global popularity of Korean beauty products as consumers worldwide tend to show more loyalty to offline outlets than online channels, according to an overseas market specialist at Korean beauty company Imine. James Park, global sales team manager of the Seoul-based company, pointed out the importance of diversified on- and offline markets. For global markets, however, he focuses more on securing offline distribution hubs in key export countries. So far, he has signed supply deals with Ulta Beauty in the United States, Boots in the United Kingdom and Europe, Mecca in Australia and Nykaa in India, all major distributors in their local beauty sectors. These offline platforms sell not just supplier's products but also their own private brand items. Imine develops hydrogel-based skincare and sunscreen products and supplies them to the platforms. These platforms are part of the 240 companies in 100 countries Imine currently exports to. “We need more than well-made products. We need to approach the global beauty markets and their distribut

InterviewCoupang’s US lobby can’t block Korean sanctions: lawmaker

Korea should enforce strict sanctions against Coupang as punishment for its massive customer data breach and ensure that the e-commerce firm is unable to evade responsibility by lobbying U.S. politicians, a ruling party lawmaker said. The comments by Rep. Kim Nam-geun of the ruling Democratic Party of Korea addressed the personal data breach of some 33.7 million Coupang customers, and the Delaware-based company’s apparent attempt to leverage its lobbying of U.S. politicians to intervene in the Korean government’s efforts at regulating or punishing the corporation. Kim, however, added that Korean authorities do not need to be overly cautious about the U.S. response, as there have not been any official complaints regarding Korea’s move to regulate Coupang. “U.S. authorities, such as the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), have not issued any official messages on Coupang, so Korea does not have to care much for any possible trade risk with the U.S. due to the latest incident,” the lawmaker said. Kim’s remarks came after Robert O’Brien, former national security adviser of the fir

KT to waive contract cancellation penalties for customers following data breach

KT Corp. said Tuesday it will waive cancellation fees for customers who wish to terminate their contracts with the mobile carrier, following a major data breach reported in September that led to a series of unauthorized micropayments. On Monday, the government unveiled the results of its investigation into the security breach at KT, concluding that the incident was caused by the mobile carrier's poor management of femtocells, small base stations designed for use in homes or businesses. "KT takes responsibility for the incidents, and we will waive cancellation fees for customers who wish to terminate their mobile service contracts with KT," the company said in a release. KT said users can apply to unsubscribe from Wednesday through Jan. 13, and the policy will also apply to customers who have already canceled their subscriptions since Sept. 1. The mobile carrier said the waiver will be provided in the form of refunds. New KT users who started subscribing after Sept. 1, however, will not be eligible. "Since the incident, KT has been contemplating ways to address the issue and come up with me

US approves Samsung chipmaking tool shipments to China for 2026, source says

The U.S. government has granted an annual licence to Samsung Electronics to bring in chip manufacturing equipment to its facilities in China for 2026, a person familiar with the matter said on Tuesday. The approval is a temporary ‍relief for the South Korean firm and follows a U.S. decision earlier this year to revoke licence waivers given to some tech companies. The source said ‍that Washington introduced the annual approval system for ‍exports of chipmaking tools to China. Samsung, ‌SK hynix and TSMC had benefited from exemptions ‍to Washington's sweeping restrictions on chip-related exports to China. But the ‌privilege known as validated end user status will end on December 31, meaning shipments of American chipmaking tools to ‍their factories in China after that date will require ‍U.S. export licences. Samsung, SK and TSMC did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Keen to limit China's access to ‍advanced American technology, U.S. President Donald Trump's administration has been re-examining export controls that it thought were too relaxed under the Bi
