The head of Hyundai Engineering issued an apology Friday in response to a fatal collapse accident at an expressway construction site earlier this week.
"A terrible accident has taken lives and injured workers at our construction site. I sincerely apologize to the bereaved families and extend my deepest sympathies," Joo Woo-jeong, chief executive officer (CEO) of Hyundai Engineering, said during a press briefing held at the company's headquarters in central Seoul.
On Tuesday, a bridge collapse at the Seoul-Sejong expressway construction site in Anseong, some 65 kilometers south of the capital, claimed the lives of four workers while leaving six others injured. The project was overseen by Hyundai Engineering.
The company initially issued a statement of apology on the day of the accident, but decided to apologize formally in front of the media.
"We are fully committed to taking all necessary measures to support the victims and manage the aftermath of this tragic incident," Joo said.
The CEO emphasized that Hyundai Engineering will fully cooperate with the ongoing investigation and take thorough measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
Additionally, Hyundai Engineering pledged to assess and address damage to nearby residential properties and ensure that affected residents receive necessary assistance. (Yonhap)
