Samsung, LG eyes patent profit from mobile TVs

By Kim Yoo-chul Samsung Electronics and LG Electronics are expecting huge intellectual property income as mobile televisions gain popularity in the United States and other major markets, industry sources said Sunday. The two, which are the world’s leading providers of flat-screen televisions, already have a wealth of key patents across broadcasting platforms for mobile televisions. The technologies are aimed at enabling television stations and telecommunications companies to beam digital content to devices such as smartphones, touch-screen tablets and other portable devices. The patents will allow the companies to reap ``millions of dollars” in royalties, according to sources. The rapid growth of Web-based video services Hulu and Netflix is expected to accelerate the transition toward mobile televisions. Samsung already has an agreement with U.S. mobile-phone carrier MetroPCS to release a television-enabled smartphone, dubbed Galaxy TV, which supports the Advanced Televisions Systems Committee Mobile Handheld (ATSC-M/H) standards. ATSC-M/H has been the American

Samsung cuts target for computer sales

By Kim Yoo-chul Samsung Electronics, the world’s biggest technology firm by revenue, has lowered its computer sales target by 10 percent to 17.1 million desktops and laptops this year, company officials said. Citing data from market research firm Gartner, Samsung said Thursday it sold a record 3.97 million computers during the first quarter of the year. ``We are positive about the further expansion of our computer business, but it’s unlikely we will achieve our earlier sales target of 19 million,’’ said a company official. Last year, Samsung sold 14.23 million laptop and desktop computers, it said. The official added the firm isn’t overly worried about the reduced target because it is focusing on ``quality growth,’’ not just ``quantity growth.’’ Its sales grew by 7 percent in the first quarter from a year ago, better than the industry’s average growth of 1.9 percent, which was led by handsome sales of its Series 5 Ultra, Series 7 and premium Series 9 models, according to the company. But this is the first time in more than a year that Samsung saw a decline of its q

'Apple CEO would want to drop lawsuit'

Wozniak calls for Korean companies to become more innovative By Cho Mu-hyun, Kim Yoo-chul Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak said that the ongoing patent battle between Apple and Samsung Electronics is doing no good to anyone, citing the dispute as a “pain in the ass.” “I have no details and paid no attention about the talks between Apple CEO Tim Cook and Samsung CEOChoi Gee-sung. But Cook would want all the lawsuits to disappear with the dispute and move the company on a forward course,” Wozniak said in a special lecture at Seoul’s Hanyang University, Thursday. During a brief meeting with reporters after the lecture, Wozniak commented on devices by Samsung Electronics. “I owned a lot of Android phones, however, I owned no handsets from Samsung Electronics, including the new Galaxy S3,” he said. “I saw Samsung’s Galaxy Note when it first came out in a Verizon store in the United States. And I looked at it and wasn’t impressed by the overall cost and inner devices.” Stronger sales of the Notes helped Samsung report record operating profit in the first quarter of this yea

LG CNS to beef up overseas business

By Kim Yoo-chul Information technology firm LG CNS giant said Wednesday that it plans to raise its overseas revenue target to some 500 billion won this year. The LG Group affiliate also reiterated its goal of increasing the portion of its revenue from abroad to half its total sales by 2020 as the company’s effort to bolster its international presence has continuously yielded tangible results, a senior company executive said. ``LG CNS aims to reap 3.7 trillion won in total revenue this year with revenue from overseas accounting for 15 percent,’’ said Oh Sea-chun, head of the company’s public relations office, adding the firm will invest a maximum of 100 billion won in research and development (R&D) initiatives. Last year, it reported 3.2 trillion won revenue, of which 14 percent came from overseas, the company said. Analysts and industry officials don’t question that Korean system integration providers such as LG CNS are facing difficulties in their move to increase stakes overseas due to a shorter business history and sentimental resistance from customers in Europe an

Samsung chairman urges firm to be more competitive

By Kim Yoo-chul Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Kun-hee asked his top lieutenants Wednesday to maintain the firm’s current lead in smartphones. Lee didn’t specify the names of rivals. But California-based Apple is likely the chairman’s biggest concern, according to Samsung officials. “Samsung’s top-management reported to the chairman on new smartphone and camera variants during a luncheon Tuesday. We discussed how to beat Samsung’s rivals,” said Kim Soon-taek, the head of Samsung’s control tower, and the chairman’s top secretary, in a meeting with reporters at Samsung’s headquarters in downtown Seoul. Lee had just come back from a three-week trip in Europe, was briefed by Samsung Electronics CEO Choi Gee-sung and mobile chief Shin Jong-kyun about the lack of results in peace talks with Apple over a patent fight. Kim declined to unveil further details about the luncheon. The chairman’s remarks come a day after Samsung Electronics released its latest Galaxy S3 smartphone in a pebble blue model. Samsung confirmed, however, it was suffering delays due to manufacturing

Galaxy S3 unveiled in 28 countries

By Kim Yoo-chul Samsung Electronics launched the Galaxy S3 in 28 countries Tuesday, which the electronics giant believes will further cement its top position in the global smartphone market. The new model will be introduced into the domestic market in mid-June. The launch comes a few days after Samsung and Apple failed in their attempt to find a compromise in their dispute over patents when Samsung CEO Choi Gee-sung and Apple CEO Tim Cook met. The next stop is the courtroom. ``In businesses, timing is everything. Samsung is planning to squeeze Apple further by aggressively promoting the Galaxy S3. Samsung doesn’t have any plan to drop its so-called two-track strategy,’’ said a high-ranking Samsung source. The Korean firm is still being asked to sooth investor worries of its U.S. customers over the ongoing shortage of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 dual-core processor, while it should produce the most-powerful smartphones possible for faster and more effective delivery. But Samsung spokeswoman Lim Yoon-jeong said the effect of such challenging factors could be ``short-lived.

SK Comm. rejects data leak damages ruling

By Kim Yoo-chul SK Communications, operator of the immensely-popular Cyworld (www.cyworld.com) social network website, is challenging a damage compensation awarded to one of its customers who sued the company over its lax protection of private data. She is among many users of Cyworld and Nate (www.nate.com) , another SK Communications service, who have pursued legal action against the company after cyber criminals raided its servers in July last year and compromised the private information of millions of users. SK Communications, the Internet business unit of SK Telecom, the country’s biggest mobile telephony operator, confirmed Friday that it will be appealing a decision by a court in Daegu to pay the customer 1 million won in damages. ``They have appealed to a higher court as expected. We are preparing the next round of court battles,’’ said Yoo Neung-jong, a lawyer who represents the user. Yoo is currently representing more than 1,000 Cyworld and Nate users seeking compensation from SK Communications. Of course, the imaginary bill of 1 billion won in damage compe

Samsung to invest $3.4 billion in new chip line

By Kim Yoo-chul Samsung Electronics plans to invest some 4 trillion won (about $3.4 billion) to build a new chip plant in Hawseong, Gyeonggi Province, where its key chip lines are located, Samsung officials said, Friday. The new line, the 17th, will start commercial operation within the first half of 2014. Samsung, however, is highly likely to skip the groundbreaking ceremony for the plant, the officials said. The latest factory-building plan is a part of this year’s 15 trillion won investment plan in chips by Samsung, the officials said. The new line will only produce profitable non-memory and foundry chips, according to the officials. Samsung is also planning to switch some of its existing memory chip-producing lines into non-memory chips, though the company declined to confirm. It has already been providing high non-memory chips to Apple and the company is receiving more calls from Qualcomm, Texas Instruments and Nvidia for customized chips on a contract basis. “Non-memory chips is Samsung’s next cash-cow. By producing such profitable chips for the lat
