Samsung drops display lawsuit against LG

By Kim Yoo-chulSamsung Display has dropped a lawsuit against LG Display that sought a ban on the latter for infringements concerning organic light-emitting diode (OLED) technology, Samsung said Tuesday.The long-standing legal battle between the two started in 2011, when Samsung alleged that 11 of its researchers had leaked details of its OLED technology to LG.“We sent a letter to the Seoul Central District Court late Tuesday to cancel the lawsuit against LG Display,’’ said Samsung spokesman Kim Ho-jeong.The cancellation came after chief executives from the companies agreed to resolve their dispute through talks, at a meeting arranged by the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.LG Display welcomed the decision.``LG Display welcomes Samsung Display’s decision to withdraw its injunction request. Microsoft unveils new application

By Kim Yoo-chulMicrosoft has unveiled a new application for Korea’s state-run rail firm Korail, which can be easily activated on its latest Windows 8 operating system, the company said Thursday.The software will enable users of notebooks and tablets to make reservations and pay for tickets via the “Glory KORAIL” app.“The app is composed of five menus ― ticketing, confirmation, discounted tickets, reservation status and my information. By using the app, you can check information from train schedules to refunds very easily,” said company spokeswoman Lee Seung-yeon.She said Microsoft is releasing customized applications that work on Windows 8 and added the company is trying to entice more corporate clients to use the new software.Since Windows 8 was released 10 weeks ago, the company has sold 60 million copies and some 1,700 mobile devices are using it. The number of downloads form Windows Store, the application market for the software, has reached over 100 million.

LG Chem top in energy efficiency

By Kim Yoo-chulLG Chem said Thursday that its naphtha cracking center (NCC) facilities were ranked first in energy efficiency in an evaluation by global market researcher Solomon Associates.LG came top among 115 NCC facilities of global firms in the U.S. firm’s recent analysis to find out which facilities are most-advanced in energy efficiency.``The result means LG Chem’s NCC facilities are far advanced and more highly-qualified at a technology level and efficiency in operation,’’ said company spokesman C.S. Song.NCC mainly produces propylene and ethylene, two key raw materials to make plastics and other petrochemical products.The survey showed LG’s NCC facility in the southwestern industrial city of Yeosu consumes 4,100 kilocalories to produce 1 kilogram of ethylene. Song said that level is 40 percent better than its key rivals. ``LG can save some 300 billion won in energy consumption annually on an annual production basis of 1 million tons,’’ the spokesman added.

By Kim Yoo-chulHyundai Motor has signed a deal with Intel, the world’s biggest semiconductor producer, to buy more advanced processors for its car infotainment systems, a source said Thursday.The contract demonstrates Intel’s strategy of diversifying its business portfolio amid stalling growth of its traditionally-strong computer chip business.“Under the deal, Intel’s Atom processor, currently being used in Hyundai’s Genesis and Equus sedans produced in China, will also be used for the same models made in Korea. SKT posts record revenue in Q4

Its operating profit, however, fell by 23.3 percent to 1.76 trillion won due to heavy spending on LTE. Doosan to raise W1 tril. for construction arm

By Kim Yoo-chulDoosan Group said Monday that it will inject a total of 1 trillion won into its troubled construction subsidiary Doosan Engineering and Construction (E&C) through a capital increase and the sale of real estate assets.The group said that under the emergency measure, the construction firm will sell shares worth some 450 billion won and sell some of its core assets to raise 550 billion won. Doosan Heavy’s profitable turbine division will be moved to Doosan E&C as another step to help the group’s construction unit stabilize its financial soundness, the statement read. Samsung, LG to end display patent battle

The truce comes through the mediation of the Ministry of Knowledge Economy.``Samsung and LG reached a broad consensus to end the ongoing legal battle.
