Hyundai Motor fares better than most

KEPCO stock reaches highest in 16 years

By Park Jin-haiThe share price for Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) hit record high in 16 years to close at 50,900 won on the last trading day of July, said the company on Sunday.Its share price surpassed the previous record of 50,500 won set in June, 1999.It is a 77.7 percent rise, since current KEPCO CEO Cho Hwan-eik took office in December, 2012.Its total market value grew to 32.7 trillion won from 18.4 trillion won in 2012.Under Cho’s leadership, the once troubled state-run power company, which has been suffering losses for five years in a row since 2008, has been working to improve its financial structure.The company posted 1.03 trillion won in operating profits last year.This year, low oil prices helped the company its first quarter performance. Auto and ship makers begin two-week-long summer leave

By Park Jin-haiWorkers at major local car manufacturers and ship builders will take a two-week summer vacation en masse starting from next week.Local manufacturers including Hyundai Motor, Kia Motors, GM Korea and Renault Samsung Motors as well as Hyundai Heavy Industries, Samsung Heavy Industries and Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) will give summer vacations.For Hyundai and Kia, all their production lines and company offices will stop operation between Aug. 3 and Aug. 7. The two largest carmakers will encourage employees to spend the vacation in local resorts, rather than overseas. Each employee will be given a 300,000 won summer vacation bonus.  GM Korea and Renault Samsung employees will have vacation during the same period. Chrysler recalls more than 6,000 cars over faulty Takata air bags

By Park Jin-haiFiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is voluntarily recalling more than 6,000 vehicles sold here because of their faulty Takata air bags, which has already have led to the recall of tens of millions of cars around the world, the land ministry said Friday.The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said that the cars’ air bag inflator may ignite with excessive force, in some cases causing its metal cartridge to crack and injure the driver or passengers of the car when deployed.The recall affects 6,322 cars sold by FCA Korea, the local importer and distributor of Chrysler vehicles.They include 5,672 Chrysler 300C passenger cars produced between April 21, 2004 and June 19, 2008; 595 Dodge Dakota pickup trucks produced between Oct. 15, 2004 and May 24, 2011; and 55 Dodge Durango SUVs produced between April 21, 2004 and June 19, 2008.  Takata air bags have led to the recall of more than 30 million vehicles in the United States alone.In a separate case, Japanese automaker Nissan Motor is recalling 296 cars sold here because of a defective engine start button.
