27 mil. user records leaked in SK Telecom data breach

Approximately 27 million user information records were confirmed to have been compromised in a major cyberattack on SK Telecom last month, the government-private sector investigation team announced, Monday. The figure surpasses SK Telecom’s total customer base of 25 million, with new findings showing that malware was also detected on servers that stored users’ device identifiers, likely making the incident one of the worst telecom security breaches in the country’s history. According to the investigation team, a forensic analysis of around 30,000 of SK Telecom's Linux-based servers revealed that 23 had been infected. Investigators identified 25 different types of malware during the probe. The leaked data amounts to 9.82 gigabytes and includes 26.95 million records, primarily containing International Mobile Subscriber Identity (IMSI) data — a critical identifier used to authenticate users on mobile networks. USTR holds closed-door meeting with US firms in Korea

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer held a closed-door meeting with more than a dozen U.S. businesses operating in Korea on Friday, during his visit to Jeju for the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) Meeting, which concluded its two-day run that day. Greer met with representatives from around 10 U.S. companies in Korea — including Coupang, Google, UPS, Bayer and Novelis — alongside U.S. Senior Official for APEC Matt Murray and American Chamber of Commerce (AMCHAM) Korea Chairman James Kim, to discuss issues such as the trade deficit and non-tariff barriers between the U.S. and Korea. Korea to hold working-level trade talks with US this week, leveraging industrial cooperation

Korea and the United States agreed to hold another round of working-level trade discussions this week, focusing on six areas, Seoul's trade ministry said. The six areas are trade balance, non-tariff measures, economic security, digital trade, rules of origin and commercial considerations. APEC trade ministers commit to advancing AI discussions

The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Ministers Responsible for Trade (MRT) Meeting successfully released a joint statement Friday, which includes an agreement to take further steps in developing initiatives to implement artificial intelligence (AI) in trade. The two-day meeting from Thursday to Friday on Jeju Island, brought together trade ministers from 21 APEC economies, along with officials from the World Trade Organization (WTO) and the OECD. SK in damage-control mode after data breach, sets up new committee

SK Group said Wednesday it has established the Information Security Innovation Committee (ISIC), which includes external experts, as part of its attempt to contain the fallout from a major data breach at its mobile carrier unit, SK Telecom. ISIC, which will act as an independent organization, will become the ninth committee of the SUPEX Council, SK’s highest consultative panel serving as the group's control tower. The newest committee has invited experts across academia and industry and is designated to detect and prevent security risks, and strengthen security across its subsidiaries, the group said. Kakao Entertainment shuts down major piracy site

Kakao Entertainment has shut down Reaper Scans, one of the biggest English-language webtoon and web novel piracy sites, the company said Wednesday. The company’s P.CoK, a team dedicated to countering piracy, has successfully led the site to halt operation last Friday, using its special technology to identify the proprietary operator. Reaper Scans is one of the biggest sites that illegally distributed Korean webtoons and web novels for six years, garnering an average of 10 million user visits per month. Its Discord channel had approximately 95,000 subscribers. It has been known to operate with its own professional groups for high-quality, unauthorized translations, resulting in a large number of frequent users and secondary distribution of its illegally translated content. The piracy site regularly updated content and generated revenue through opening sponsorship channels and running advertisements. At one point, it even charged users to view its content. SK Group is accelerating its portfolio rebalancing with the latest move to merge its subsidiaries as part of its ongoing effort to eliminate overlapping business and direct its focus on future technology such as semiconductor and artificial intelligence (AI). The group's holding firm SK Inc. said Tuesday that its board has approved transferring SK Materials’ four semiconductor subsidiaries to SK Ecoplant and selling SK C&C’s Pangyo data center in Seongnam, Gyeonggi Province, to SK Broadband. Naver backs startups targeting North American market

Naver’s in-house corporate venture capital D2SF shared its forthcoming direction to contributing to Korea’s startup ecosystem, vowing to assist up-and-coming startups in entering the North American market.
