A South African photographer has filmed an epic battle between a group of lions and a water buffalo.
Roan Ravenhill, 28, captured the moment in the Mala Mala Game Reserve.
It is not known when Ravenhill took the pictures.
Ravenhill said a group of five lions struggled for 90 minutes to overcome the water buffalo.
The pictures show the lions clawing, gouging and sinking their teeth into the buffalo. At one stage a lion is impaled on the buffalo’s horns.
Ravenhill’s last picture shows the lions eventually taking down the buffalo.
“By a long way, it was the longest battle we have ever seen between lions and a buffalo -- it was hard to watch, but that is the reality of nature,” Ravenhill said.
