A mother exposed to radiation during pregnancy gave birth to a baby with one eye in the middle of his forehead, the British Daily Mail has reported.
The baby was born at a private hospital in El Senbellawein, Egypt.
The baby’s condition is cyclopia, a rare birth defect named after the one-eyed giants of Greek mythology.
Doctors said radiation exposure in the womb leads to the condition.
The baby’s eye socket could not form correctly, causing the baby to have only one eye and no nose.
Since the baby has other deformities, including a malformed heart, Dr. Ahmed Badruddin expects the boy will die within days.
Badruddin also presumed a combination of medicines the mother took would cause cyclopia.
The condition can occur as often as four times in 1,000 births. But most fetuses with cyclopia die in the womb. It also occurs more commonly in animals.
