A Chinese court has jailed a man for provoking trouble with his long beard.
The court in Kashgar, northwest China, sentenced the man to six years’ jail. His wife was jailed for two years.
The couple were convicted after allegedly starting quarrels and causing trouble in the city.
The man, 38, started growing his beard in 2010 and his wife wore a face veil and a burqa, according to the China Youth Daily.
The city authorities associate men growing beards with extremist Muslim ideas.
“Since the beginning of the year, a certain number of people breaking the regulations on beards, veils and burqas have been prosecuted and sentenced,” an official said.
