Renowned Japanese author Haruki Murakami made waves recently by criticizing on the key policies of his country’s president, Shinzo Abe.

During a Q&A session on Murakami’s website, a female fan complained that it was “hard to ‘shine’ when I cannot work due to illness and fail to get pregnant.” The remark was in reference to Abe’s pro-woman economic policy dubbed “womenomics.”

Abe has pledged that the policy will help women “shine.”

Murakami replied, “All the ‘shining women’ around me would tell Abe, ‘You are the last person who can tell me to shine.’ What we need is to embrace equal opportunity, not this useless policy.”

“All the workers in my office have been women for a long time. To be honest, men are no good in terms of the work I do. What men do can be done by women most of the time,” the writer added.

The reclusive author, who seldom interacts with the media, received some 10,000 questions from the fans in four days.
