3D technology gives dog new lease on life

A 3D-printing company in South Carolina has used cutting-edge technology to help improve the life of a dog with underdeveloped front legs.

A video released by 3D Systems tells the story of the dog, named Derby, and the company’s efforts to make sophisticated prosthetics to help increase his movement. Derby was born with the condition, and was unable to run and had trouble moving on hard surfaces.

Tara Anderson, who works for 3D Systems, heard about the dog three months ago from a group called Peace and Paws.

“I kept looking at his photo and hearing his story, and I cried literally every time,” she said in the video, explaining why she decided to help the animal.

Anderson said the dog was fitted with a wheeled cart, which worked well but limited his ability to play with other dogs.

Anderson sought the help of animal prosthetics experts at the company. Using 3D scanners and software the team developed a custom-made pair of prosthetics.

The 3D technology “allows us to get in there and really modify the organic digital models quickly and easily,” Kevin Atkins of 3D Systems said.

The video shows Derby running with apparent ease using the prosthetics.

“The first time he was put on them, he took off running,” said Sherri Portanova, who recently adopted Derby. “I was absolutely amazed at how well he did.”
