One-legged mixed martial arts fighter Matt Betzold has signed a professional contract with Legacy Fighting Championship.
Legacy FC promoter Mick Mayhard was quoted by sports website Bleacher Report on Wednesday as saying the flyweight, 31, from Sacramento, California, would meet an unnamed opponent in Houston, Texas on Feb. 27.
Betzold’s left leg was amputated when he was six years old after he ate poisoned candy given to him as an “act of revenge,” against his father, according to the report.
The Brazilian martial arts master told the website MMA Junkie that his father had been “wrapped up in something, accused of something.”
He said his father was involved with “some bad people ... who did that to me as, I guess, revenge.”
With Betzold holding a 6-3 record, with five victories by submission, Legacy FC predicts his debut under its banner will attract more attention and bigger crowds than usual.
