New shows on ABC starring Asian-Americans generate buzz

By Kim Young-jin

Two new American television shows starring Asian-Americans are generating excitement on the Internet.

The shows ― “Fresh off the Boat” and “Selfie” ― are part of ABC’s fall schedule, which the network announced earlier this week.

Selfie stars John Cho, the Korean-American actor known for his roles in the “Harold and Kumar” comedy films as well as last year’s “Star Trek Into Darkness.”

Cho plays Henry, a marketing expert who decides to “re-market” his coworker Eliza, a social media star who “realizes being friended is not the same as having actual friends.”

“Fresh Off the Boat,” picked up by the network earlier this week, stars 10-year-old Hudson Yang, the son of noted Asian-American writer Jeff Yang.

The show focuses on an immigrant family which faces culture shock when they move from Washington, D.C. to suburban Orlando. Korean-American comedian Randall Park appears as the father of the hip-hop loving Eddie.

ABC’s decision to pick up Fresh Off the Boat made waves over the weekend because it is first network family sitcom to feature an Asian-American cast since 1994’s “All-American Girl,” starring comedian Margret Cho.
