It's not a landfill, it's a river full of waste

Once a former tropical paradise, The Citarum in Java is now considered one of the dirtiest rivers in the world.

Photos do not represent a landfill site. In fact, it is just such a polluted river, full of garbage that makes it hard to tell if it is a river.

The river suffers from household waste and toxic chemicals dumped by major textile manufacturers, losing 60 percent of its fish stock.

The river sometimes turns red, yellow or green because of the high concentration of dyes. It is believed to contain chemicals that cause cancer and skin and mental diseases to humans.

Nevertheless, even now, more than 35 million people rely on the river for residential uses.

Residents once tried to block a factory wastewater pipe, but the results remain unknown. (Daily Mail)
