130,000 guests reportedly attend wedding in Malaysia
The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission is carrying out an investigation into Malacca chief minister following complaints about the lavishness of his son's wedding party last weekend, the New Straits Times has reported.
MACC deputy chief commissioner Datuk Mohd Shukri Abdul said a thorough investigation of Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam would be carried out.
"We are going to look through item by item, to see how much money was spent and who paid for it... we are checking," he said.
Since the investigation had just begun, Shukri declined to comment further.
Up to 130,000 guests reportedly attended the wedding of Mohd Ridhwan and Nur Azieha Mohd Ali at Dewan Tun Ali in Bukit Katil here on Sunday.
The wedding set a record in the Malaysia Book of Records for the highest guest turnout at a wedding.
Ali said he would not stop anyone from lodging a report with the MACC over the cost of his son's wedding reception.
"This is a democratic country and I would allow the process of the law to take its course. I would not stop anyone."
Ali was responding to a report lodged by the state opposition leaders to the MACC on the alleged corruption over the wedding party.
Ali said the record attendance for his son's wedding reception was a sign of the people's acceptance of the state's leadership. He also challenged the opposition leaders to reveal their wedding expenditure.
Ali's aide M.S. Mahadevan said earlier this week that 500 people had volunteered for the event.
