Blue roses finally go on sale in US: report

Blue roses will finally go on sale in the United States and Canada for the first time this autumn, the Daily Mail reported Thursday.

The mythical blue flowers will be available at selected florists from the beginning of November, the report said.

Named “Applause,” the rose is created using genetic modification to synthesize a pigment found in blue flowers know as delphinidin, it said.

And while it may appear purple in color, it is the nearest to a blue flower scientists have come so far. Previously, the only blue roses available have been white ones which are dyed blue, the Mail said.

This is because nature is unable to produce blue pigments, according to the newspaper.

However, after 20 years of trying, Japanese company Suntory Ltd. finally made the breakthrough in 2009. Since then, the flowers have been available to buy in Japan ― although at 15-20 pounds for each stem.

In some cultures, the flowers signify attaining the impossible, while they can also denote regal majesty and splendor, according to the Mail.
