Wild goose chase after a tiger toy
When members of the public phoned and said that they had spotted an escaped white tiger in a field, police certainly weren’t going to take any chances.
Scrambling a helicopter, sending out armed officers and calling in help from a nearby zoo, the hunt for the beast began.
But the force’s efforts proved to have been a waste of time because the ‘tiger’ turned out to be a large cuddly toy, reported British Daily Mail on Monday.
Reports of the animal spotting came near the Hampshire town of Hedge End, England.
Hampshire police enlisted help from experts at nearby Marwell Zoo, who were ready to send in a team to overcome the tiger. Officers evacuated a golf course near the field and warned locals to stay indoors until they had captured the beast.
It was only when thermal-imaging cameras failed to register any heat from the target that officers became suspicious.
When a blast of air from the helicopter blades flipped the ‘tiger’ on its back, red-faced officers realized they had been stalking a life-sized animal.
“We received a call from people who were convinced that there was a real tiger in the field. I was on the ground myself and it did look very realistic,” said Acting Chief Inspector Steve Wakeford of Hampshire Police.
“We started to suspected that it might not be real when it didn’t run away from the helicopter and as it got closer to the ground, the wind from the blades actually blew the tiger over on its back.”
He admitted the police did have a laugh when they realized the mistake but added that they took the report seriously for it was “better to be safe than sorry.”

헤지 엔드라는 햄프셔 마을 근처에서 처음으로 탈출한 동물이 있다고 제보를 받았다.
햄프셔 경찰은 호랑이를 잡을 팀을 준비했고 인근 Marwell 동물원에서 전문가의 도움을 받기로 했다. 그들은 곧 인근 골프장에 대피령을 내렸고 짐승을 잡을때까지 지역 주민들에게 집안에 남아 있으라고 경고했다.
그러나 열 영상 카메라를 이용해서 동물로 부터 열기를 포착하지 못하면서 관계자들은 의심을 하기 시작했다. 그리고 헬리콥터에 의한 바람때문에 호랑이가 뒤집혔을때 그들은 여태까지 실제 크기의 호랑이 인형을 쫓고 있엇다는 것을 깨달았다.
햄프셔 경찰 Steve Wakeford 경위가 “우리는 지나가는 사람들에게서 전화 제보를 받았다. 나도 현장에 나갔는데 인형은 진짜 호랑이와 똑같이 생겼었다,”고 말했다.
“우리는 호랑이가 헬기로부터 도망가지 않을때 부터 진짜가 아닐지도 모른다는 의심을 하기 시작했다. 호랑이가 뒤집혔을때 가짜라고 확신을 할 수 있었다.”
그는 경찰의 실수를 깨달았을 때 호탕하게 웃어넘겼지만 그래도 제보를 심각하게 받아들인 게 다행이라고 덧붙였다.
