Plot behind donation for sick daughter revealed

A mother in her seemingly late 30s sat on her knees holding her baby in her bosom on a road in Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, March 22, attracted passing pedestrians.

The woman tearfully cried, “Save my daughter,” while crawling on her knees for about 1 km. The baby was suffering from malignant tumor on the retina, losing her sight gradually.

As the story was put on the Internet, a netizen promised to “give 20,000 yuan (about 3.4 million won) if she crawled on the road with her baby in her arms,” according to local reports.

Sympathetic netizens collected as much as 280,000 yuan (about 47.6 million won) for two days after hearing that the man, with the ID “Wealthy Son” did not appear.

The story seemed to end with sincere maternal instinct and warm citizen spirit, but local reporters became doubtful when they were covering the impressive story. There seemed to be a deal between the mother and the netizen involved.

“I will not give money to you even if you crawled for 1km,” he said in a call to her. “People will become enraged at my remarks and donate more money to you,”he said, in collaboration of a conspiracy.

It is not yet confirmed whether the woman made a promise to divide the funds with the “Wealthy Son.”

She appealed for forgiveness as the plot got exposed. “I will return the money I received for my daughter’s treatment,” she has reportedly said.

“It’s natural enough for a mother of a sick baby to do such a thing” and “This means that the life of one’s baby is precious, while the mind of innocent citizens are not?” were some of the mixed comments on the Internet.

“딸 살려달라” 눈물 엄마에 쏟아진 기부금, 알고 보니…

지난 22일 중국 광둥성 광저우시의 대로변에는 30대 후반으로 보이는 아기 엄마가 아기를 안은 채 길거리에 무릎을 꿇고 앉아 행인들의 눈길을 사로잡았다.

이 여성은 딸을 안고 무릎을 꿇은 채 1㎞를 기어가며 “딸을 살려 달라.”며 눈물을 흘렸다. 그녀의 딸은 시력을 점차 잃는 악성 망막 종양에 걸린 상태였다.

이 사연을 한 인터넷 사이트에 올리자 어떤 네티즌이 그녀에게 “아픈 딸을 안고 거리를 기어가면 2만 위안(약 340만원)을 주겠다.”라고 약속했다는 것.

하지만 ‘부잣집 아들’이라는 아이디의 이 남성이 결국 나타나지 않았다는 사연을 접한 네티즌들은 그녀의 모성에 안타까움을 표하며 이틀 동안 무려 28만 위안(약 4760만원)을 기부했다.

이야기는 눈물겨운 모성애와 따뜻한 시민정신으로 끝나는 듯 했지만, 현지 기자들이 미담을 취재하던 중 석연찮은 사실을 밝혀냈다. 해당 여성과 돈을 주겠다는 네티즌 사이에 모종의 거래가 있었던 것.

딸을 도와달라는 글을 읽은 남성은 해당 여성에게 직접 연락해 “당신이 무릎을 꿇고 1㎞를 가도 나는 돈을 주지 않을 것이다. 사람들이 이 사실을 알게 되면 내게 분노하며 당신에게 더 많은 기부금을 줄 것”이라며 공작을 도모했다.

이 여성이 아이디 ‘부잣집 아들’의 남성과 기부금을 나눠갖는 등 어떠한 약속을 했는지는 밝혀지지 않았다.

모든 사실이 폭로된 이 여성은 “기부 받은 치료비를 다시 내놓겠다.”며 용서를 바란다고 호소한 것으로 알려졌다.

네티즌들은 “아픈 아이를 보는 엄마의 심정으로 충분히 할 수 있는 행동”, “자식의 목숨은 귀하고 선량한 시민들의 마음은 귀하지 않는거냐.”며 엇갈린 반응을 보이고 있다.
