Global Hawk flying to check Japanese reactors
A U.S. Air Force unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) has been dispatched to take a closer look at the damaged reactors of the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant, U.S. CBS Broadcasting reported Thursday.
Officials said that a Global Hawk drone was flying missions over the reactor to gathering information on the nuclear power plant. In addition, U-2 spy planes were providing images to help the Japanese government map out its response to the quake and tsunami, the New York Times also reported.
These drones, manufactured by the U.S. Northop Grumman Corp., has sensors which can detect heat, acquire images of the reactors showing which parts of them are at what temperatures, and repeated observations could provide critical data about the effectiveness of different attempts at cooling the reactor vessels.
If the Global Hawk can provide detailed images of the buildings, it could be a big help for the authorities planning the next attempts to cool down the damaged reactors.
“We have units from all of our services, with a multitude of capabilities, from medical to communications to civil engineering, poised and ready to support where needed,” the U.S. Ambassador to Japan John V. Roos said.
“Automatic robots will be placed within the plants to measure the amount of radiation,” said the Tokyo Electric Power Company. The attraction of robots is their potential to work in hazardous environments, thereby reducing the human risks associated with the work. These robots 150cm high and 80cm wide can be maneuvered automatically up to a distance of 1.1km.
