Oldest prostitute in Brussels calls it a day

The Brussels regional news website brusselnieuws.be reports that the capital's oldest and possibly most famous prostitute is to retire after a career spanning 37 years.

The 59 year-old Sonia Verstappen has worked in the red light district around Brussels’ North Railway Station since she was 22 and was a spokeswoman for women that have willingly chosen to work in the world’s oldest profession.

In recent years, Ms Verstappen has given lectures at universities on male sexual desires.

Sonia Verstappen stated to work as a prostitute of her own volition at the age of 22.

She says that she did so as she was jealous of the women that were able to go upstairs with clients while she sat at the till of the brothel where she worked.

She has never had a pimp and was able to choose her clients. Ms Verstappen’s door was always kept firmly shut for bedraggled, unkempt, dirty or drunken men.

Over the years Sonia Verstappen has campaigned for prostitution to be given legal recognition as a profession as this would offer greater protection to the thousands of women in Belgium that work as prostitutes.

She has also slammed the lack of action by the authorities against the problems of forced prostitution and people trafficking that are all too prevalent in the red light district around Brussels North Railway station.

브뤼셀 ‘최고참’ 매춘부 은퇴 결심

브뤼셀 지역의 온라인 매체 '브뤼셀뉴스'는 수도에서 최고참이자 가장 유명한 매춘부인 소냐 페르스타펜(59)가 37년간의 매춘직을 그만두기로했다고 지난 3월 2일 보도했다.

소냐는 22세 때부터 브뤼셀 북역 사창가에서 매춘을 해오면서 세계 역사상 가장 오래된 이 직업에서 기꺼이 일하고자 한 여성들의 대변자였다.

최 근년, 페르스타펜은 대학에서 남성의 성적 욕구에 대한 강의를 해왔다.

소냐는 22세에 자신의 의지로 매춘으로 이하기 시작했다고 말했다.

소냐는 자신이 일하는 매춘업소에서 계산원으로 앉아있는데 손님과 윗층으로 올라가는 여성들에 질투가 나서 일하기 시작했다고 말했다.

페르스타펜은 그 동안 포주 없이 손님을 골랐으며 다른 매춘업소와 달리 그녀의 영업장 문은 항상 굳게 닫혀 있었는데 이는 술주정뱅이에 단정하지 못한 뜨내기를 차단하기 위한 것이었다.

그녀는 북역 사창가의 대변인으로 최근 몇 년간 인신매매를 근절하는 등 수 천명의 매춘부인권을 보호하려면 매춘을 음지에서 양지로 끌어내야 한다면서 매춘의 합법화를 요구해 왔다.
