Brazilian festival to give away 89 mil. condoms
With plans for the world famous Rio Carnival well underway, Brazil has declared war on AIDS. Their weapon -- The contraceptive condom.
Brazil's health ministry is planning to give away 89 million free condoms during the upcoming Rio Carnival, reported local press Feb. 19. This amounts to 26 million more condoms compared to the number last year.
The reason for this year's increase in condom distribution is the alarming spread of AIDS amongst youths.
“According to past years' statistics, women aged 15 to 24 are most likely to contract AIDS,” said a senior health ministry official. The increased distribution of condoms during the carnival is to combat the rapid spread of AIDS amid an atmosphere of casual sex.
Brazil's health minister kicked off the AIDS prevention campaign, saying that using a condom is not about insulting your partner, but about saving lives. He pleaded with Brazilians to make good use of the free condoms.
Brazilian authorities are planning an extensive television and Internet advertisement campaign about the seriousness of AIDS and how to prevent it, to be relayed during the carnival.
The best estimate of the number of Brazilians with AIDS stands at around 630,000. It is further estimated that approximately 25,000 of those are not even aware of their infection.

세계적인 축제 리우 카니발을 앞두고 브라질이 에이즈(AIDS·후천성 면역결핍 증후군)와의 전쟁을 선포했다. 무기는 피임도구 콘돔이다.
브라질 보건부가 이번 리우 카니발 기간 동안 콘돔 8900만 개를 무료로 뿌릴 예정이라고 현지 언론이 19일 보도했다. 이는 지난해 축제기간 때보다 2600만 개 많은 것이다.
브라질이 이처럼 올해 카니발 기간에 배포되는 콘돔의 수를 늘리기로 한 건 청년층 에이즈 확산의 속도가 심상치 않기 때문.
보건부 고위 관계자는 “지난 수년간 통계를 보면 여자 15-24세 사이에서 에이즈 감염자가 가장 많았다.”면서 “카니발 기간 중 개방된 성문화로 인해 에이즈가 빠르게 확산될 수 있어 콘돔을 지난해보다 많이 보급키로 한 것”이라고 밝혔다.
알레산드레 파드릴라 브라질 보건장관은 이날 시작된 에이즈 예방 캠페인에서 “(성관계 때) 콘돔을 사용하는 건 상대에 대한 무례가 아니라 생명을 지키는 일”이라며 무료로 나눠주는 콘돔을 애용(?)해 달라고 호소했다.
브라질 당국은 카니발 기간 동안 TV와 인터넷 등으로 에이즈의 심각성과 예방법을 다룬 영상물을 대대적으로 내보낼 예정이다.
정확한 수는 파악되지 않고 있지만 브라질의 에이즈 감염자는 약 63만 명에 이르는 것으로 추정된다. 이 가운데 자신이 에이즈 보균자인지조차 모르는 사람은 약 2만5000명에 이르는 것으로 추측되고 있다.
